Why can’t fitness be fun anymore? A decade ago, we had a horse farm and I didn’t think about how many steps I walked in a day (in fact, I didn’t want to know). I worked outside every day, I hauled hay and horse feed; I worked with horses and I went riding. We would go out on long trail rides every other day or two. According to the American College of Sports Medicine, the Bay Area of San Francisco would likely win a challenge to survival of the fittest and Seattle’s metropolitan residents would likely come in second. The American College of Sports Medicine brought in an expert panel of 26 health and physical activity specialists to measure the health and fitness index of 16 different cities. Disabled Does Not Equal Unable

The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 required public buildings, schools, libraries, restaurants and office buildings to provide wide doors and ramps to allow accessibility for people who are blind, deaf or in wheelchairs equally. Interestingly enough, health clubs are rarely set up to allow the 49.7 million Americans (as of the 2000 Census) estimated to be in wheelchairs, blind or otherwise physically or mentally impaired. There are a handful of gyms that are accessible for wheelchair bound patrons, but many gyms have equipment placed too close together to allow wheelchairs to navigate around them.
