What Do You Have an Abundance Of?

I’m in the process of reorganizing my house, again. My daughter got her own apartment so now I have a four bedroom house to spread out in, all by myself. Well, Clementine is here but she only weighs ten pounds and doesn’t insist on her own room. In moving things from one room to another, I still need to finish the remodel on the master bedroom before I can ever use it, I found some things that I don’t think I can live with out. It really is the little things. *Scissors, I think I have scissors in every room … Continue reading

Back-to-School Pains

I stand corrected. Perhaps, breakfast battles, lunch packing, backpack hunting and supply shopping aren’t the worst parts of back-to-school. I forgot about labeling. Today my daughter received a letter from her new teacher welcoming her to second grade, sharing a few anecdotes, and providing a list of all the fun that awaits once the new school year kicks off. At the bottom of the cheerful note was a reminder to parents about labeling school supplies prior to the first day of school. I forgot about the school’s policy which requires labeling every.single. item. that passes through the classroom door. Every … Continue reading

Raw Unpasteurized Almonds

Huh? Unpasteurized, you ask? Isn’t pasteurization what they do to milk? Well, yes, it is. And as of Sept 2007, it’s also what they do to all almonds grown in California. Pasteurization is a process used to destroy things like viruses and bacteria on food. The Wikipedia article on almonds tells us: “Because of cases of Salmonella traced to almonds in 2001 and 2004, in 2006 the California Almond Board proposed and the USDA approved rules regarding the nature of almonds available to the public. From 1 September 2007, raw almonds will technically no longer be available in the United … Continue reading

Parmesan or Parmigiano: The politics of cheese?

I’ve mentioned before how my husband LOVES his cheese. He is serious about cheese and you can tell when he eats. No matter how tasty a dish of mine might be, he adds cheese to it. All the same, his seriousness pales in comparison to Italy and Germany and their current debate in the high courts of the economic union. In one corner we have Germany who produces no less than 10,000 tons (yep–tons) of cheese per year. Well, not just any cheese. . .that would be 10,000 tons of ‘parmesan’ cheese per year. They have been building a strong … Continue reading
