Ten Staples for Your Pantry

With the snow still falling in parts of the country as a blizzard sweeps across the Midwest, having a well-stocked pantry is something to think about more seriously. After all, when the weather is frightful, the last thing you want to do is go out into the storm for groceries – or go hungry. Having a well-stocked pantry is important for other reasons as well. Four years ago, I got very sick. The weather was also awful, and I couldn’t get my sick self through the storms. I had to rely on what I had prepared in the cupboards, and it … Continue reading

Preparing For Emergencies

It’s so important, especially when you are single, to be prepared for emergencies. The scariest thing I can think of as a single mother is a loss of income due to illness, injury or layoff. I try to plan ahead as much as possible, just in case, and one way I do that is by having food storage. This is something I would recommend for all families. Knowing that you can still feed your kids will alleviate some of the stress and let you focus on other things. Getting a good food storage together takes time, don’t try to do … Continue reading

Dilemma: Baby Food Storage

When I decided to make my own baby food, I didn’t go out to buy any special materials. Sure, there are some handy do-it-yourself baby food kids, but I couldn’t justify spending the money on them. I use my own pots to steam the vegetables, puree them in a regular small food processor, and store them in regular Tupperware. The Tupperware is where I ran into some problems. Our refrigerator is usually jam-packed with food and drinks. Don’t ask me why, because I couldn’t tell you. It’s just my husband , daughter, and me. What are we going to do … Continue reading

Is Your Family Prepared?

My first experience with talking about food storage to someone who was not a member of the church came just after 9-11. She pulled me aside to let me know that she had purchased extra groceries just in case something happened. She was quite proud of herself, but then she went on to explain the other ways and reasons that she purchased in bulk and in advance. She felt that food storage was a good thing especially for the disasters that may come in our lives. She was right, but sometimes people look at our food storage and provident living … Continue reading

Recent Reasons for Personal Preparedness

We’ve all watched with awe and horror as Ike ripped through the southern portion of the United States, bringing residents of Texas and surrounding areas to their knees. Our hearts go out to those who have been devastated by this event and to those who have lost homes and family members. My mother is serving a mission in Houston right now and shared with me some of her experiences. Working in the employment center, she has been able to help many displaced persons find what they need in order to keep going. Other friends of mine also live in the … Continue reading

June 2008 Preparedness Goals

For June’s preparedness goals, we are going to focus on what you need to store. This is really just getting a plan together. You will store different things then I store. Each situation is unique. You should put together an overall plan, but I a going to divide it into three sets of questions you should ask yourself, and then give you a challenge on what you should purchase this month. 1) First think of your three month food supply. The church counsels us to store three months of food that we eat on a regular basis. This food should … Continue reading

Gospel Questions: About Food Storage

My non-member friend asked me: Why do Mormons stockpile food? Do they think the world is coming to an end? In a nutshell, yes, we do. That answer is a little bit flippant. Let me elaborate. In the Book of Revelations, we read of calamities that will befall in the last days. These are passages that are familiar to those who have read the Bible, and the End Times prophecies are familiar to all Christian religions. The leaders of the LDS Church have encouraged us to put up a reserve of nonperishable food in our homes so that we might … Continue reading

May 2008 Preparedness Goals

I have gotten off track on the food storage goals. This month we are going to focus on our emergency kits. If you already have one you can focus on something else that you need, or you can add to yours or update the supplies. Emergency kits are commonly used in disasters, and it is important that everyone has one. You should start with the basics and move up. Here are three basic goals you should work in regards to your emergency kits. 1) Ideally you should have an emergency kit for each member of your family. The one exception … Continue reading

Visit Your Home Storage Center

If you live near a church home storage center (also commonly referred to as a cannery), you should take advantage of this when planning and purchasing your food storage. Your ward may plan a trip or two every year, or you may be asked to volunteer your time at the cannery. Another option is to use the dry pack canner that your stake has and prepare your food that way. You may find that it is cheaper to purchase the food on your own, and then can it. You can order just the cans, lids and oxygen absorbers from the … Continue reading

I Can Sleep When the Wind Blows

About 99% of all talks given in the Mormon Church contain the following story: A man went to a fair where several young men had gathered to look for work. He interviewed the boys and asked them what their skills were. One young man said, “I can buck hay really well.” Another said, “I’m good with animals.” One boy said, “I can sleep when the wind blows.” The man didn’t know what to make of that answer, but it intrigued him. After talking to all the applicants, he decided to take the boy with the peculiar answer home with him. … Continue reading
