What’s Going on in Your Area?

Depending on where you live, there are probably different fall festivals, harvest parties, haunted houses, and perhaps an Oktoberfest celebration or two occurring. There seems to be lots to do this time of year in many regions, perhaps with the anticipation of spending the next many months indoors due to cold weather. Well, we do have some of this stuff out here in the sticks, but today’s big deal is the annual lawnmower races. Yep, I said lawnmower races. It’s okay to laugh; I did too when I heard about it. Some people, however, take it seriously. Some have been … Continue reading

Friday Night Lights—A Lesson In Proper Fitting Football Helmets

Our family has turned into a bunch of football fanatics. No, we aren’t glued to the TV all day Sunday or on Monday night (I’m not anyway), but with school back in session we have a standing date with a row of silver bleachers at two local high schools. Both my cousin and nephew are members of their respective high school football teams and we try to make it to their home games to cheer them on. After doing this for the past few weeks all I can say is… thank goodness my kid is not on the field. Watching … Continue reading

Why is America Still Obsessed with O.J. Simpson?

I looked at the cover of my National Enquirer this week and guess who was on the cover – O.J. Simpson. In case you’ve forgotten, it has been over ten years since O.J. was first accused of murdering his ex-wife Nicole. Twelve long years and yet he is still making the cover of tabloids. What is our fascination with O.J. Simpson? I can understand perhaps being fascinated with the O.J. of old. I remember the football hero who was so popular even after retiring from football. He was the Heisman Trophy winner in 1968 for USC, held numerous NFL records … Continue reading

Once in a Lifetime

I was scanning an Entertainment Weekly when I saw something that caught my attention. There is a documentary coming out on July 7, 2006 called “Once in a Lifetime.” It is the story of Steve Ross and his decision to purchase the New York Cosmos soccer team in the 1970s. Not only did Ross purchase the Cosmos, he set out to build a team the likes that had never been seen before or since. It is not unusual for you to see a couple of kids kicking a soccer ball today, but in the 1970s, it was almost unheard of. … Continue reading

Interview with NBC’s East Coast Sportscaster, Vai Sikahema – Part 2

And so we continue our interview with Vai Sikahema with questions on his chosen professions. 3. You’ve had great success in your chosen professions, first as a football player and now as a sportscaster. You played on a national championship team (BYU 1984), you played for the NFL and now you are a successful sportscaster for NBC in the Philadelphia area. What do you think has played the largest role in your successes and why? I suspect because my parents didn’t have a college education, and they constantly shared with us their frustration of having to work menial jobs – … Continue reading

Interview with NBC’s East Coast Sportscaster, Vai Sikahema – Part 1

Vai is a very dear friend and old college buddy of my husband’s, consequently he is a very dear friend of mine. He agreed to do this interview, I am certain, out of friendship. From NBC10’s website we catch up with what Vai has been doing since leaving college, professionally: “Vai Sikahema, sports director/anchor for NBC 10 News at 4, 5, 6 and 11pm, joined WCAU in April 1994. Sikahema is also the host of “Wednesday’s Child,” a segment sponsored by the National Adoption Center, Freddie Mac Foundation, and NBC 10 to promote the adoption of children. Previously, he was … Continue reading

My Day at Cougar Nation

I know, I know — it’s a stretch tying BYU Football to Family Home Evening. But come on, it could work! Bronco Mendenhall, the coach of the BYU Cougars Football team, hosted a day for the football alumni yesterday. What a blast it was to see old friends, legends and new acquaintances. I stood between my husband and 1965’s running back, Mr. Swanson (either Dave or LaVern), as we watched the Cougars scrimmage. Here’s the joke I was told: “What happens to people who say shoot? They go to heck.” Corny, yes. But did it make me laugh, yes. It … Continue reading

BYU Football – Spring Ball

Okay, this is going to be a short one. My last two blogs have been a little bit lengthy. I know BYU football isn’t a category here — but hey, is there anything more intrinsic with the LDS family than BYU sports? Today, my husband and I are going to check out the scrimmage that ends BYU’s Spring Football just before the Blue and White game takes place on Saturday. Why? Because we love BYU football. We’re excited for the year to come and the changes which took place in the coaching staff last year. We have a dear friend … Continue reading
