How level is your House?

If your home is not level, it can lead to many and varied problems. Some are minor or merely nuisances (cakes in oven are uneven no matter how often you adjust oven height), while other issues can be quite serious such as leading to structural damage. It really depends on how badly leveling is needed and what that entails. If leveling is required, it is advised to hire a professional to take care of it. It’s generally not cheap, but leveling a home is not an area where most people are going to be comfortable with guesswork. It can also … Continue reading

Warnings from Isaiah

How much notice do you take of warnings? Every day we see warning signs telling us to slow down on the road, to take corners at a safe speed or warnings about the dangers of smoking or alcohol or overuse of painkillers. Too often people ignore the warnings and trouble results. Isaiah contains a number of warnings for God’s people. In verse 14, God through Isaiah, warns of the dangers of scoffing and treating God’s Words lightly. Jerusalem thought they were okay because they were God’s people. But that does not mean a license for them to do as they … Continue reading

Visiting Teaching Message: Standing Strong and Immovable

This month’s visiting teaching lesson is on how to become the Lord’s instrument by standing strong and immovable. As we stand against the tides of the evil one, we are able to stand in holy places. As always, you should prayerfully select from the quotes given in order to teach the things the sister you are responsible for needs to hear. It is interesting to me how this relates to one of the blessings promised to the elect, as we discussed in the Gospel Doctrine lesson for the week. In JS-M 1:11, we learn that “he that remaineth steadfast and … Continue reading

Marriage is Bad for the Community? Really?

Marriage is a sacred institution and it’s about deepening family ties whether you are a European princeling making a power match with an Austrian duchess or an Irish-American dentist marrying an Italian-American schoolteacher and integrating their extended families. We build communities around this sense of nuclear family and by extension the rest of the family on both sides. Marrying broadens your local community, incorporating a whole new support network and more. But according to sociologists Natalia Sarkisian and Nami Gerstel – not so much anymore. In fact, it seems that modern marriage is more about people setting themselves apart. They … Continue reading

Fixing Makeup Bloopers

It’s happened to me too many times — a color that looks GREAT under the bright lights at the cosmetic counter looks a lot less great when it gets home. But you don’t have to toss your shiny new purchase. Here are some quick fixes for makeup color problems. Is your foundation too dark? Dilute it with a drop of facial moisturizer. Just add a drop of foundation and a drop of lotion and mix it in the palm of your hand. You can also just save your too-dark foundation and use it during the summer, once you’ve picked up … Continue reading

How You Can Help the Sick and Suffering

Imagine getting some test results at the doctor’s office, and learning that you have an incurable illness. (It could happen to any of us.) Suddenly, you want to know what research is being done and how you can get well. What if you knew that cures were on the horizon, but people just aren’t that interested in getting involved? My good friend and mentor, author Rick Walton, recently learned he had Parkinson’s disease. Just prior to this diagnosis, his four-year-old son was diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes. With all of these life changes, Rick is taking up the cause of encouraging … Continue reading
