Travel Tales: How Not to Cut Down on Your Gas Bill

Desperate times call for desperate measures. And in some cases illegal action. With the price of gas skyrocketing to record levels it’s no surprise that some people are resorting to some unconventional means to gas up. Just ask police in Hermitage, Pennsylvania who say they may have finally figured out how mass quantities of diesel fuel have been lifted from local gas stations. According to authorities, the perpetrators allegedly employed a specially equipped pickup truck trailer with a trap door and a vacuum hose. Police say no one has been charged for the crime yet, but the truck and trailer … Continue reading

Gas and Go… or Not

Okay, now I’ve heard everything… With the price for a single gallon of unleaded gas well over the $4 mark in most parts of the nation it’s no wonder motorists are getting creative when it comes to filling up at the pump. For instance, a guy in Denver recently gave new meaning to “squeezing every penny at the pump.” Get this: according to news reports, clerks at a gas station just outside the Mile High City actually called the police when a man came in and insisted on using $10 worth of pennies to prepay for his fuel. Responding officers … Continue reading

Insane Fuel Surcharges Spread to Taxis

Well, I suppose we all saw this one coming… only that doesn’t lessen the sting. In what has now turned into a near weekly event with major airliners, some taxi companies are now charging more for fuel surcharges. Just yesterday taxicab drivers in south Florida were given the green light to force passengers pay a surcharge to make up for rising fuel prices. According to news reports, Miami-Dade County commissioners unanimously approved a measure allowing cab drivers to begin raising rates as a way to offset the skyrocketing price of fuel. Here what is means for all of you travelers … Continue reading

Summer Travel: Unique Ways to Save Money on Gas

A family in Tennessee has found a way to beat the skyrocketing price of gas and it doesn’t require getting on two-wheels or a couple of blades; rather the clan has a new plan—-using four legs. As in those connected to their mules. Record high fuel prices have forced the Raymond family of McMinnville to get creative in the way they travel. Not only are they using a pair of mules to get around their farm, they also ditched their tractor and put the animals to work hauling hay from their fields. When gas prices inched close to the $4 … Continue reading

Gas Attack—Man Fights Back

You’ve heard the complaints. Heck, you’ve probably spewed out a few yourselves. The cost of gas is ridiculously high and most drivers are not holding their tongues when it comes to ripping into those in charge of price gouging. But there is one man who lives not far from my neighborhood who is doing more than just flapping his lips about the outrageous price of fuel. Brian LaFave says he has given up on complaining. In fact, he couldn’t care less how high gasoline prices climb these days. The Wisconsin man has parked his pickup truck and is refusing to … Continue reading

Save Money on Gas—Buy a New Car

I’m sure you’ve seen them by now… those new commercials from car companies offering cheap or free gas to anyone willing to buy a new vehicle. With a gallon of regular unleaded gas going for about $4 these days the ads got me thinking about whether the deal really could help save money. For those of you who don’t watch TV on a regular basis there are two major auto manufacturers who are currently offering gas incentives to anyone who purchases a new car in the next few weeks. For example, one commercial claims if you buy a Chrysler, Dodge … Continue reading

Fueling Your Summer Vacation with Gas Savers

A couple of years ago I blogged about the incredible amount of North American lodgings offering gas-saving travel deals to vacationers who were keeping a close eye on their wallets. Well, here we go again. With the price of gas nearing record highs tourism officials around the nation are pulling out all the stops to lure visitors to their neck of the woods. One state making headlines with their new fuel discounts is New Hampshire. The state’s Division of Travel and Tourism Development has wallpapered New Hampshire and its surrounding states with ads for gas-saving travel deals. They include: The … Continue reading

“Maui No Kai Oi”

In Hawaiian “Maui No Kai Oi” means Maui is No. 1 or “the best.” But these days the popular saying is being used more in relation to the island’s gas prices than its breathtaking views from sugary white sand beaches. Living in paradise comes with a price and my family members (some of who live on the Valley Isle) can tell you that traveling around the Hawaiian Island of Maui is costing them a fortune. According to AAA, Maui is now home to the most expensive gas prices in the nation. A gallon of regular unleaded there has hit the … Continue reading

Sunday Travel Funnies: “OUCH!”

Talk about feeling the pain at the pump… Well, not quite the gas pump, but the gas tank. That’s where an Alabama driver recently got his finger caught when he was trying to clear gunk from the opening of his gas tank. According to police reports, Dwight Clark says he was innocently trying to clean his truck’s gas tank when his finger went in past the knuckle and got lodged in the tank. According to rescue personnel, people had sprayed WD40 all over his hand, but that didn’t work. Now, here’s the part that gets me—Clark reportedly didn’t want rescue … Continue reading

And You Thought You Had It Bad At The Gas Pump

How much are you paying for a gallon of gas these days? Around here the price is hovering around $3.50. Outrageous! But, not as bad as in Aspen, Colorado where unleaded gas prices recently broke the $4 mark. If you think that’s bad consider this: some disabled drivers are getting socked even harder because they can’t get out of their cars to pump gas themselves. Some gas stations are charging disabled drivers up to 50 cents more a gallon for the same fuel you and I are filling our vehicles with. I learned about the gas rip-off during a recent … Continue reading
