Epcot Flower & Garden Festival Kicks Off This Week

This week the Epcot International Flower Garden Festival officially opens.  It’s one of Epcot’s longest events, in the length of time it’s going on at the park.  So from year to year it might not seem like a lot changes.  This year, though, it’s got something special up its sleeve. One of Disney’s big films of the year is “Oz: The Great & Powerful,” which tells the story of how a man from the American Midwest became the wonderful, terrible Wizard of Oz.  It opens on March 8, two days after the kickoff of the Flower & Garden Festival, and … Continue reading

The Companion Animal Life-Care Center

One of the Center’s more unusual residents I’ve a heartwarming story to share from the rescue with which I volunteer. For the majority of 2010 we cared for Miles, a 7-year-old Bassett Hound. His age, however, made it difficult for us to find him a home. We spent many months watching the adoption of younger dogs around him, but no one wanted Miles. Finally, we were approached by a unique interested party: the employees from a retirement home. Now we have one of our most special happy endings to share, of Miles the hound that lives amongst the residents at … Continue reading

Gifts for Gardeners

Just because we may be dreaming of a white Christmas doesn’t mean that gardeners aren’t also dreaming in green. If you are looking for something special to get that person who loves to putter outside and grow things, here are some great gift ideas. And if you yourself are the gardener, well, print this article, circle what you would like to have, and leave it somewhere conspicuous. Nursery Gift Certificate It was only recently that I learned that many nurseries offer gift certificates. I suppose that this never occurred to me before. But it is true. Local garden centers or … Continue reading

Tour A Rose Garden

In my previous blog: “Family Travel: Time To Stop and Smell The Roses” I tried to encourage you to get out and discover the fragrant blossoms blooming at your local botanical garden. My family took advantage of the wonderful spring-like temperatures on Mother’s Day to take a tour of our local gardens and I just got the pictures I took there back today. I am happy to report that the shots of my daughter next to the roses came out beautifully. Which is why I am anxious for you to get out and explore your local rose garden–even if it … Continue reading

The Garden of all Gardens

This is it. This is going to be our best and biggest garden yet. It’s huge! It is at least twice the size of the biggest garden we’ve had so far. My husband and I have been working hard for the past several days and we’re not done yet. We do have a good start though, nice and early, so our plantings can take advantage of those soon to be upon us April showers. So, what are we going to have in our garden this year? Well, there is plenty to tell you about! We started off with three kinds … Continue reading

Can’t Wait to Garden? Start Early…

Are you suffering from spring fever already? One really warm day is usually all it takes for me. Most of us cannot wait to get out and about, but many also can’t wait to get out into the garden. Well, there’s no need to wait for perfect weather; you can start a little early with prep work doing some plantings indoors. Start those Starter Plants If you have the extra space, now is a good time to get some starter plants going, so they’ll be ready for transplant when the growing season begins. There are some convenient options available at … Continue reading

Don’t Eliminate the Entertainment Budget

Often, when times are economically tight, as they are now for most of us, the entertainment or fun budget is the first thing to go. Just because there is less money available, doesn’t mean that there has to be less fun. Do Put Something in the Budget for Entertainment Designate some amount for family fun, even if it is only limited to $20 a month or even less. Budgeting for entertainment sends the message that family fun is important, even when it isn’t expensive. If you create a zero-based family fun budget you may wind up indulging anyway, and blowing … Continue reading

Art Class Adventures Part VI

I apologized to the teacher and was getting ready to leave, when she turned to me and asked if we could make a different two to four year old art class in October. Relieved, I told her absolutely and she overrode the already booked class to squeeze in our son! I was still very annoyed at myself for getting the class time wrong and it was clear that our son was very disappointed that we missed his class. We decided that we should take advantage of our failed outing and enjoy the sculptures outside as well as the gardens, which … Continue reading
