Sunny Travel Funnies—-Cross Country Crack-Ups

It’s been a while since I wrote my last installment of the Sunday Travel Funnies, but this week it’s back… with some major crack-ups. We begin in Jacksonville, Florida where a driver there caused an accident that would no doubt have Bill Cosby shaking his head. According to police, a truck driver narrowly escaped serious injury (he did sustain injuries but has since been released from the hospital) this week when his truck smashed into another vehicle and flipped over on a local highway spilling thousands of Jell-O snack packs on I-95. Police say the truck driver lost control of … Continue reading

Fueling Your Summer Vacation with Gas Savers

A couple of years ago I blogged about the incredible amount of North American lodgings offering gas-saving travel deals to vacationers who were keeping a close eye on their wallets. Well, here we go again. With the price of gas nearing record highs tourism officials around the nation are pulling out all the stops to lure visitors to their neck of the woods. One state making headlines with their new fuel discounts is New Hampshire. The state’s Division of Travel and Tourism Development has wallpapered New Hampshire and its surrounding states with ads for gas-saving travel deals. They include: The … Continue reading

The Nation’s Highest Gas Prices and Where You Can Get a Break the Next Time You Fill Up

It is the one place you don’t want to be if your wallet is an empty as your gas tank. I’m talking about Gorda, California. Yesterday it was named as home to the most expensive gasoline in the United States. The lone gas station in the tiny Big Sur town is currently charging $5.20 for a gallon of self-serve unleaded gas. The price jumps to $5.40 if you want a gallon of premium. So why is the price of fuel so high there? The gas station owner says it boils down to location, location, location. The Amerigo Gas Station is … Continue reading

Does “E” Really Mean Your Car is Empty?

With the price of gas hovering dangerously close to $4 a gallon around here I am tempted to see how just how much farther my car could go once the needle on the fuel gauge hits “E.” Of course, any car expert would give you a laundry list of reasons why this is not a good idea. Still, I must admit there were a number of times in college when I pushed my poor car to its limit and rolled into gas stations on fumes. Which begs the question: Just how far can you drive once you hit “E?” I … Continue reading

Courtney and Crew Present: The Case of Who Cut the Cheese

In a house full of little stinkers, who do you blame when a bomb explodes? That is the dilemma I found myself in this weekend. Lucky for me I have a bad nose. I don’t always smell the odors Murphy, Mr. Meow, and Tabby (and Wayne) freely share. But Wayne does. The SBD Release It was a peaceful Friday night lounging on the couch watching TV after a nice dinner out. Suddenly, Wayne springs up from his couch with his nose all scrunched up and shouts, “Ewww! Someone stinks. Bad!” He Who Smelt It Dealt It I’d seen the salad … Continue reading

Gas or Electric Dryer?

Trying to decide between a gas or an electric dryer? Do you really have a choice? What are the differences in each option? Check out this simple guide that will answer the most common questions and help you make the right decision. Is there a difference in efficiency? In general, gas dryers are more efficient than are electric dryers. They operate more with and almost “instant heat” as compared to electric dryers which take time to reach temperature. Also, gas dryers tend to operate at a hotter setting, and this can shorten drying time by a few minutes, but in … Continue reading

Miko’s Personality Flaw

Four years ago today, my dog Miko passed away peacefully in his sleep. I’ve mentioned him here before — his adventures at the dog park, how he picked me out at the shelter, and our last days together. He was a great dog, full of personality and so very smart. He dazzled the family with tricks from the first night he was home. But if he had one flaw, it was in his digestive tract. When Miko was nervous… man that dog could pass gas! We first noticed it in his first few months with us. Miko could clear a … Continue reading

Avoid the Gas Gouge

Here is a little secret I just recently learned about saving money on gas. I think you’ll like it, since you can probably save an average of 20 cents a gallon on gas without any special calculations, gas watching or long distance driving (which actually wastes gas). This tip is so obvious, I wonder why I never thought of it before. And if you are traveling this summer, you’ll really want to take advantage of this little piece of advice. When filling up on gas, avoid the gas stations that are right near interstate exits. These stations know that they … Continue reading

Gas Tank Giveaways

Are high gas prices making you reevaluate your summer road trip? We are paying more than $3 a gallon around here, but judging by the number of SUVs (weighed down with jammed packed bike and luggage racks) I saw lined up at out local Shell station on Sunday I doubt many people are calling off their vacations and opting to stay home. Perhaps those travelers were taking advantage of one of the many gas promotions being offered by hotels nationwide. Several companies are trying to make road trips a bit more affordable by footing the bill for your gas. Take … Continue reading

Do You Visit Gas Tracker Sites?

Well, I’ve figured out another sector of the population that is benefiting from the astronomical gas prices besides oil companies—Internet gas trackers. I’ve spent many a blog touting sites such as GasBuddy.com and the AAA’s “Fuel Price Finder” so it stands to reason that as gasoline prices go up, the more money these types of websites make. Take a look at GasBuddy.com. The site got started in 2000 to track daily gasoline prices using volunteers to e-mail what they found while traversing the country. According to its creator, back then only a few dozen people used it. But by 2004, … Continue reading
