Devotions of Prayer

Like many of the other topics I have written about in my “Devotions” series, doing a study over prayer is hardly something that can be done completely in one short setting. The Bible has a lot to say about prayer: how to pray, what to pray for, and examples of prayer. An in-depth study on prayer would likely take several hours, if not more, of intense look at the Bible and what it has to say about prayer. However, by saying that I do not intend to discourage you, but rather prepare you for what is available on the topic … Continue reading

You Can Afford to Adopt

Five years ago, my career was going well. I was flying to Europe in Business Class every other week and staying in the finest hotels in the capitals of Europe. I was negotiating multi-million dollar sales of international businesses. I was six years away from a very comfortable retirement. But my heart was with the children in the ghettos of Houston. My company offered an early retirement package for anyone over fifty years old. There was no way that the offer made sense financially. I agreed to take the offer as soon as the sale that I was currently working … Continue reading

Medicine or Faith?

For some proclaimed Christians, seeking certain types of medical treatment and using various types of medicines can be viewed as a lack in faith or believed to be against God’s plan. There are people who prefer to avoid many medications because of the unknown future complications that could arise. The Bible show us some medications used during its history: Wine used to numb pain (Proverbs 23:35) Ointment to sooth (Isaiah 1:6, Luke 10:34) Figs to treat a boil (2 Kings 20:7, Isaiah 38:21) Leaves used for medicine (Ezekiel 47:12) Jesus recognized physicians (Matthew 9:11) Wine with myrrh for pain (Mark … Continue reading

Who is Jesus? Looking at the Trinity

As I begin the third part to the “Who is Jesus?” series, you might be wondering where the Trinitarian or Triune beliefs come from if God is one. 1 John 5:7 says, “For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one.” In the true definition of Trinity, God is defined as being three persons in one Godhead. Though when we look in the Bible, there is no mention of the word “trinity” or “triune”. We do, however, see 3 roles or aspects in God but we really … Continue reading

Who is Jesus? Examining the Book of John

This is the second part of the series on “Who is Jesus?” The book of John really shows who Christ is so I’d like to examine some of the scriptures. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.” (John 1:1-3). This is of course talking about Jesus as Jesus is the “Word”. Continuing on down to verse 10 through 13, “He was in the world, and the world was … Continue reading

Intro: Who Is Jesus?

I am going to begin a short series on who Jesus is. One of the most disheartening things I hear is when other people who are said to be Christians have a misconception of who Jesus Christ is. I didn’t live 2000 years ago so the only source for me in knowing who Jesus is, is to see what the Bible has to say; to see who Jesus Himself claimed to be. Here is a compilation of scripture references and comments that I hope will be helpful to those of you who still aren’t sure, or those who need that … Continue reading

Witnessing without a Word

We know we are supposed to witness to others and share the message of salvation. It is imperative for Christians to reach out to others and do our best to help show them to the Lord. However, sometimes how we go about witnessing may not be effective. Preaching will not work with most people. Many don’t want to hear the message of God, and they certainly don’t want to feel guilt for their sins. Preaching will likely drive people with this mindset further away from the Father, instead of leading them to salvation. Frequently, the most challenging people to witness … Continue reading

The Joy of the Lord

When I was little, we sang a song in Sunday School that simply repeated the phrase, “The joy of the Lord is my strength,” over and over. I have come back to those words many times in my life, and they give me comfort. Sometimes joy is difficult to maintain. We get so caught up in just trying to get through the day that we forget Psalm 118: 24: “This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.” (Psalm 118: 24, KJV) I know I forget it sometimes. I get wrapped up … Continue reading

Commonality

What can bring a mechanic, a computer whiz, a public school teacher, and a CEO together? The Lord can bring these people together. What can bring the most popular girl in high school, the smartest boy in high school, and the shyest girl in high school together? The Lord can bring these people together. What can bring an ex-alcoholic, an ex-convict, and an ex-adulterer together? The Lord can bring these people together. In the world people place themselves in distinct groups. Most groups are based on some sort of commonality between the individuals. Most of the characteristics of these individuals … Continue reading
