Some Kids Are Not Attending School

Some parents have noticed that their child, pre-teen or teenager have been avoiding going back to school. NPR posted an article titled: “3 years since the pandemic wrecked attendance, kids still aren’t showing up to school”. In other words, there are many parents out there who have kids that are unable to attend school.  According to NPR, Hedy Chang, the executive director of Attendance Works, says she hasn’t seen the kind of recovery she’d hoped for. “I think people had been a little bit under the false impression that when COVID became more endemic, that that would result in a … Continue reading

What if she wants to go to school?

It is assumed that a child who is not interested in homeschooling should be heard yet a child who is not interested in going to school should accept attending.  If it is a parents choice to send a child to school regardless of the child’s wishes then shouldn’t the parent also have the authority to make the same decision about homeschooling?  Seems logical to me.  Yet, I hear of parents not homeschooling because the child does not want to be homeschooled.  I hear of well meaning family and friends who tell a homeschool parent that perhaps the choice needs to … Continue reading

Back-to-School Celebrations

Are back-to-school parties more for the parents or the kids? After all, I don’t know many children who joyfully celebrate the end of summer and their subsequent freedom to stay up late, sleep in, and hang out at the pool, park or beach all day. Still, the long Labor Day weekend begets partying whether your child is in the mood or not. Whether you choose to host a back-to-school theme or a more subdued late-summer event, consider taking advantage of the ability to celebrate outdoors as Old Man Winter will be here before you know it. Back-to-school shindigs don’t have … Continue reading

School Shopping On a Budget

It’s back to school time for most of us. I remember how worried I was that first year I was divorced. Where was the money going to come from for school clothes? There seemed to be so many expenses. I was fortunate that first summer, my niece and nephew were old enough to stay home alone and Hailey stayed with them so I didn’t have to pay for daycare, when school started it was a different story. There were so many things to worry about, Hailey was going to be a latch key kid for the first time, she would … Continue reading

Ten Reasons I love being a Parent of Preschooler

1. Keeps you young. Having a little one around keeps me active. It also keeps me enjoying activities like going to the zoo, the park, or just exploring the back yard. Even the books and lessons of a preschooler will help you feel young. You have to be in good shape to chase an active preschooler around. 2. Love all the fun kid stuff. I am a kid at heart so I love the crafts, toys, and cute movies. I have seen the Toy Story movies about 20 times each after having four children….maybe more. I still love it. I … Continue reading

School District Wants to Microchip Students

A school district in Rhode Island wants to start implanting RFID chips into the schoolbags of students. This is a pilot program that hasn’t been done before. The school feels that this would help them monitor students. The ACLU says that this violates the privacy of the students, and could actually risk their safety. In my opinion, this is a very strange way to use technology. The Middletown School District, in Rhode Island, is interested in launching a pilot program that it feels would help them to better monitor some of its students. The school wants to put RFID chips … Continue reading

Does Your Child’s School Have A Full Time Nurse?

Is the person sitting inside the Nurse’s Office at your child’s school actually a trained nurse? Or, is this person a playground monitor who is filling in for the nurse on the days when she is not going to be in your child’s school building? The answer to that question could directly impact your child’s health, and could lead to a seriously scary medical emergency. Parents of children who have special needs are acutely aware of the medications that their child is required to take on a daily basis. Kids that have ADHD, or an autism spectrum disorder, or a … Continue reading
