Tea Can Help You Focus

When you hit that afternoon slump, don’t head for the coffeemaker. Try a cup of tea, instead! Recent research is pointing to black, green, and oolong tea as a great way to sharpen your focus. Part of that mental boost comes from the caffeine in the tea — the same caffeine you could get from a cup of coffee or an ice cold soda. The other part of the mental boost is something you can only get from a cup of tea — an amino acid called theanine. When paired with caffeine, theanine can boost neural activity, helping you concentrate. … Continue reading

Nestle isn’t making these claims without having done at least a little homework … Continue reading

Blooming Teas

As I was sitting down to write about blooming teas –also called flowering teas, display teas, or blooming art teas– it occurred to me that this was another discovery made with my sister Coco. Like she did with Penzeys Spices, it was she who noticed the bags of tea with pictures of flowers on them in Franklin Tea, a specialty tea shop. She asked the owner what the picture represented, as the flowers were very exotic looking but the only writing on the bags was in Chinese except for the “title,” in this case “Jasmine Fairy Maiden.” “Oh that’s my … Continue reading

The Rainbow Of Teas

Teas come in a lot of different colors these days. Black is the “traditional” tea, the one we’re all used to. Green tea came onto the scene in a big way, followed more recently by white and red teas. So what’s the big deal about each color? Black, white, and green teas all come from the same plant. The difference in color comes from the age of the leaves used and the amount of processing done. White tea leaves are the youngest and are harvested before the leaves are even fully open! Green teas are lightly processed; black teas are … Continue reading

A Great-tasting Green Tea

This is my very first food blog here at Families.com. I decided my first blog would be about my favorite green tea, because, well, I ran out of green tea at my home this morning and I am certainly thinking that I want to get some more of it. A friend of mine introduced me to a wonderful Celestial Seasonings green tea called Blueberry Breeze. This tea has such a sweet flavor that after I tried it the first time, I knew I’d be purchasing my own very soon. And, I bought some of it during my next trip to … Continue reading

Cancer Prevention—Five Foods You Want To Put In Your Shopping Cart

Not a day goes by that I don’t hear about a “new warning” regarding foods that could cause cancer. I’ve written a few blogs on the subject myself, mainly because my mother is a breast cancer survivor. Since her diagnosis I actively seek out information relating to cancer. So imagine my delight when I saw a recent health report citing foods that experts say could actually prevent cancer. According to leading dieticians, five foods that could help stave off cancer are: 1. Tofu or Soy. Dieticians say soy contains two compounds beneficial in the fight against breast and prostate cancers. … Continue reading

Does Green Tea Help with Weight Loss

In the past few years, we have seen increasing information pertaining to green tea and weight loss. While many people enjoy a soothing cup of green tea in the morning or with dinner, does it really help a person lose excessive weight. The answer is yes but in addition, green tea has been proven beneficial for a number of health issues. I have personally used green tea supplements and consumed green tea, being pleasantly surprised that it does work. Another supplement discussed in recent years is ephedrine, which has proven dangerous and even deadly. For this reason, ephedrine has been … Continue reading

Is it the Green Tea or the Locale?

Green tea is a wonderful drink that of late we hear a great deal about in news about health and fitness. A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association states that Japanese green tea could definitely reduce the risk of heart disease. However, the study did not find any relationship between drinking green tea and reducing cancer rates. The FDA still states that they have found ‘no credible evidence’ to indicate that green tea reduces risk of heart disease. In fact, the evidence is rather sketchy other than the fact that unsweetened green tea is better for … Continue reading
