Excuses for Not Exercising:#1 I Do Not Have the Money

Some people think that it takes a gym membership, a diet program that involves meetings and upfront payments or fancy exercise equipment to get in shape. The fact is you do not need money to exercise. There are numerous forms of exercise and they are all right before your eyes. When you open your front door, what do you see? You have miles and miles of land before you. Do you live in an area that you do not feel safe to walk or ride your bike outdoors in? If so, then drive to an area that you do feel … Continue reading

When the Gym Teacher Goes Nuts

I think it was Woody Allen, who once wrote: “Those who can, do. Those who can’t, teach. And those who can’t teach — teach gym!” You might think that there is some truth to that statement after you learn what a gym teacher in New York did to land himself in hot water. According to police, a substitute gym teacher lost it with an 11-year-old student during an innocent game of dodgeball last week. Police say 58-year-old Daniel Sanabria of New Rochelle, got into a fight with the sixth grader at the end of a gym class dodgeball game. Sanabria … Continue reading

Are You a Dirty, Smelly, Rude Gym Rat?

Be honest, do you have a habit of leaving gym cardio machines dripping with sweat? Are you guilty of stacking dozens of plates on pieces of gym equipment, then sashaying away without ever stripping down the machine and putting them away? Or, are you the type of gym member, who works out in the same sweat-stained, smelly rotten clothes day after day, and pretends no one else has a nose? A recent survey of fitness instructors reveals that there are more dirty, smelly, rude, gym members than ever before. But, why? Experts say the stress of the times could be … Continue reading

Bad Things Happen When You Stop Going to the Gym

Remember when you first got your gym membership? Everything was new and exciting; you were determined to drop excess weight, get fit, and look great for your high school reunion, pool party, 40th birthday, etc. You used that adrenaline to fuel regular gym visits for the first month or so, then you discovered how easy it was to skip the gym one day, then the next day and the day after that. If this scenario sounds familiar to you, I have bad news: A new University of Missouri study found that the negative effects of skipping exercise can occur in … Continue reading

Gyms Catering to Members with Health Issues

Are you getting the most out of your gym? When my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer a few years ago her doctor recommended she follow a regimented fitness program. She started going to a run-of-the-mill gym in her very small hometown and worked out with a trainer. However, she never quite felt comfortable with the exercise routine and she ended up canceling her gym membership less than a year later. I always thought that had she found a better gym (unfortunately there are only two gyms in the city she lives in) she would have stuck with the program. … Continue reading

Don’t Fall into the Gym Membership Trap!

Do you realize how many well-meaning Americans with great intentions join a gym during the first week in January? Before this pregnancy, I was going to the gym every Monday through Friday throughout the year (after having a gastric bypass in 2001, I’m pretty motivated to not go back to my pre-surgery body). Most of the time, the machines at the Bally Total Fitness where I work out are pretty easy to get to. There are loads and loads of treadmills, bikes and elliptical trainers as well as several series of circuit training machines and loads of free weights. No … Continue reading

Dad’s Losing It: How have you been?

The little hiatus is over here at Families.com and I would love to tell you that during the break my eating and exercise routine has been on-point, but I do not fancy myself a liar, so I will say no such thing. To be honest, I have been having a rough stretch recently with sweets, cookies, donuts and soda entering my body at a way-too frequent clip. I have also been seen eating potato chips (which I do not really even enjoy) and ice cream (Girl Scout Cookie Thin Mint – which I enjoy very much. I am helpless to … Continue reading

21 Things I’ve Learned about My Christian Walk at the Gym

If you go to a gym, it might be fun to seek out a correlation of your faith and your workout. The following are some things I’ve come up with: 1. Doing the right thing might take some sacrifice but is worth it at the end of the day. 2. My Christian walk is like being on a moving treadmill; when I’m not walking forward, I’m back-sliding. 3. I don’t make it very far if I haven’t eaten a good meal or drank enough water. 4. Just when I don’t think I can take another step, I learn that I … Continue reading

Dad’s Losing It: Back on Schedule

Okay, now we are cooking with gas! My back feels pretty darn good and as a result I was able to hit the gym twice at the tail end of this snowy week, once for mere 27 minute walk on the treadmill. The second trip allowed for more time, and I completed a 40 minute total body workout which saw me walk for 22 minutes and proceed to work on the ab crunch, rowing, hip abductor and adductor, and the overhead pull down machines. Soundtracks were the new, yet to be released Bright Eyes “Four Winds” EP (exactly 27 minutes … Continue reading
