Life and Death: Patrick Swayze and Willie Aames

It is funny how two celebrities can face death in different ways. As you know, Patrick Swayze has stage-4 pancreatic cancer. Pancreatic cancer is a tough one – there are usually no symptoms, so when it is discovered, it is in an advanced state and if very, very lucky, the patient may get five more years of life. (Photo by Alan Light is licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 2.0 License) I have always thought Patrick Swayze was a pretty classy guy – I mean he has been married to the same woman for 33 years, which is like a 100 … Continue reading

Ann Coulter Spot Pulled from the Today Show

Ann Coulter is a conservative Christian political commentator, columnist, author, and talk show guest who uh-hum, occasionally rubs people the wrong way. And, by “occasionally,” I mean most of the time. Her past controversies have included saying Canada sent troops to Vietnam (they didn’t), criticizing some of the widows of 9/11 (whom she called “broads” who are millionaires and insinuated they enjoyed their husband’s deaths), saying of the Muslim nations “We should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity,” and saying the U.S. would be a better country “if women did not vote” because if only … Continue reading

The Golden Globes are Announced

The Golden Globes award ceremony will be on NBC on January 11th, provided there isn’t another strike (and yes, there is a potential actors strike brewing). Today, we learned who might just win at the 66th annual Golden Globes. For Best Drama, the race is between Brad Pitt’s The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, the historical piece Frost/Nixon, The Reader (about a German lawyer, a woman he loves, and Nazi war crime trials), Revolutionary Road (based on the novel by Richard Yates about a couple in the ‘50s), and Slumdog Millionaire (about a Hindi orphan who stands to win 20 … Continue reading

Don’t Say ‘Goodbye’ to Jay Leno Just Yet

Jay Leno is slated to leave “The Tonight Show” next May after seventeen years. Conan O’Brien, who has been putting his time in at the late slot for fifteen years, will take over as the host of the show. But, Leno won’t be moving very far. NBC announced today that Leno will take over the 10 p.m. weeknight slot next fall, leaving him just the summer to relax before returning to work. Rumors had been circulating for a while that NBC didn’t want to lose Leno and the possibility of him hosting another show for NBC seemed like a good … Continue reading

Television Celebrity Deaths: Paul Benedict and Beverly Garland

Actor Paul Benedict died last Monday at the age of 70. Benedict is probably best remembered as playing Mr. Bentley, the English neighbor of George Jefferson, on “The Jeffersons.” Benedict played the character on the show from 1975 until 1985 with a briefly departure for the 1982 season. Benedict suffered from acromegaly, a pituitary disorder which gave him an over-sized jaw and angular features. The unusual looks allowed him to use his facial features well in comedy skits. In addition, Benedict also appeared films such as The Goodbye Girl, The Man with Two Brains, This is Spinal Tap, A Mighty … Continue reading

‘The Hills’ Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt Elope

Fans saw Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt’s relationship go from on-again to off-again on the show. Their romance drove a wedge between former BFFs (best friends forever) Heidi and Lauren Conrad. In fact, at one point, no one seemed to know if the two were really engaged or not. But now, the two from “The Hills” seem on-again – for good! The two announced to the press that they quietly eloped to Mexico last Thursday, November 20. The marriage occurred at the One & Only Palmilla Resort outside of Cabos San Lucas. These two usually seem to love the attention … Continue reading

Warren Beatty Sues as Rosie O’Donnell Returns

Remember back in 1990 when Warren Beatty both starred in and produced Dick Tracy? I never saw the flick (personally, I was more interested in the Warren Beatty/Madonna hookup that resulted from it), but apparently, plenty of people did. The film earned more than $160 million worldwide. It seems that in order to make the film, Beatty had to strike a deal with the Chicago Tribune, which owned the rights to the comic strip. The original deal stated that Beatty could retain the rights if he made another film, television series, or television special featuring the crime fighting detective. (This … Continue reading

High Winds Ruin David Blaine’s Finale

If you have watched NBC at all this week, you have probably seen excerpts of David Blaine’s latest stunt, “Dive of Death.” The 35-year-old magician is known for doing death-defying stunts, including a stunt in which he was suspended over London in a clear cube for 44 days without food and only minimal water each day and one where he was submerged into a sphere filled with water for seven days straight. (Photo by Nelia Schrum and as a work of the U.S. federal government, the image is in the public domain.) This week, he hung upside down over Central … Continue reading

Mackenzie Phillips Arrested for Drug Possession

Hum, maybe some day, celebrities will realize that their messed up lives can affect their kids. Scratch that, maybe ALL parents will realize that their messed up lives can affect their kids. But, anyhow, for right now, I will talk about the latest celebrity child in the news – Mackenzie Phillips. For those that don’t know, Mackenzie is the oldest daughter of now-deceased folk singer John Phillips. By the way, Mackenzie counts among her half siblings former Wilson Phillips member China Phillips and actress/model Bijou Phillips. John came to prominence in the Sixties with the group the Mamas and the … Continue reading
