Cher: The Original Diva – Part 1

The Lindsay Lohans, Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez’s, and yes, even Madonna’s of the world have one woman to thank for their being able to combine singing and acting careers – Cher. Yes, long before most of them were even born, Cher was doing it her own way, no matter what anyone said. Oh sure, Liz Taylor had grace and charm on the screen, but you never heard about Liz in the recording studio, did you? Most of today’s kids probably think it was Madonna that broke that door down, but I would have to disagree – I think Madonna took … Continue reading

The Best of George Carlin

Michele just wrote a blog of George Carlin’s life, but I feel that he was such a big part of pop culture for so long (5 decades!), that Families could stand two blogs. George and I had very little in common – he was a hippie type who liked to rag on the government and the president. I am a Republican yuppie who strongly supports most things our government does. However, somewhere in between, we found a common ground and more times than not, George had me laughing so hard, I cried. Like him or not, the world truly lost … Continue reading

Oprah OWN’s the Airwaves

I just wrote a blog about “American Idol” and what a force that show is for other’s to deal with. But, you want to talk about a force – at least “American Idol” doesn’t have its own network (at least not yet). In case you have not heard, Oprah Winfrey apparently is not happy enough having a television show, a magazine, a satellite radio show, a production company, her Oprah.com website, and her own reality show (Oprah Winfrey’s The Big Give). No, now she is going to have her OWN network. And by OWN, I am not trying to emphasis … Continue reading

Classic TV: WKRP in Cincinnati

What happens when you take a group of ragtag misfits and bring them together at a radio station? In the case of the classic television show “WKRP in Cincinnati,” you get a hilarious sitcom. “WKRP in Cincinnati” ran from 1978 to 1982 and was based on creator Hugh Wilson’s time spent at a album-oriented rock station. What makes a show great is a combination of the writing as well as the acting and “WKRP in Cincinnati” had an abundance of both. Over its brief run, the show garnered 10 Emmy nominations. Three of the characters did a spin off called … Continue reading

Classic TV: In Search Of

The other day, I mentioned how storm chasers were covered on the show “In Search Of” and how much I loved that show. It’s original run was from 1976 to 1982 and it was hosted by none other than Mr. Spock himself, Leonard Nimoy. As the show opened, Leonard gave us a taste of what was to come with the opening “Lost civilizations, extraterrestrials, myths and monsters, missing persons, magic and witchcraft, unexplained phenomena. “In Search Of…” cameras are traveling the world, seeking out these great mysteries. This program was the result of the work of scientists, researchers and a … Continue reading

Ed McMahon Losing his Home?

We all know how rough the economy has been lately, with gas prices skyrocketing and housing sales plummeting. Now it seems as if the crunch is even hitting celebrities. Ed McMahon has admitted that his Beverly Hills home is facing possible foreclosure. Ed, who is 85, appeared on “Larry King Live” and said that he and his wife Pam are $644,000 behind on their mortgage. What happened to the man that was a staple on the “Tonight Show” with Johnny Carson for 30 years? Not to mention he was the host of “Star Search” for 20 years, plus the spokesman … Continue reading

Morgan Spurlock Spends “30 Days” in a Coal Mine

I have blogged before about my love for the FX Network reality show “30 Days.” This show is done by filmmaker Morgan Spurlock (the guy that did SuperSize Me and it puts one person in another person’s shoes for 30 days. Sometimes it is a random person and sometimes it is Morgan living the other life for 30 days. Last night was the season premiere and Morgan decided to work 30 days as a coal miner. After all, Morgan is from West Virginia – a state known for its coal mining. And, I have to admit, before I watched the … Continue reading

American Idol News: The Final Two and Taylor Hits Broadway

If you watched “American Idol” this week, you know that next week’s season 7 winner will be named David. It just remains to be seen if his last name will be Cook or Archuleta. The two Davids squeezed out the last remaining female contestant, Syesha Mercado, this week. The musical styles of the two Davids are quite different. Although Archuleta is only 17 years old, to me, he has a sort of 70s easy listening feel to his music. On the other hand, Cook is pure rocker, through and through. Regardless of which one wins, I am sure we will … Continue reading

Anne Heche a Deadbeat Mom and Jack Black Confirms Twins for the Jolie-Pitts

Poor Anne Heche! First, her series “Men in Trees” was cancelled by ABC and now she says she cannot pay child support. She has been paying almost $15,000 each month to former husband Coley Laffoon in both child and spousal support. But, now that she is unemployed, she claims she can no longer afford it. In recent court papers, she said, “I am continuing to look for work, but I have no offers pending and the impending strike by the Screen Actors Guild reduces my prospects for work even further.” Oh, by the way, there may be another strike coming … Continue reading

James Garner Suffers a Minor Stroke

Actor James Garner has suffered a minor stroke. The 80-year-old actor was hospitalized last week, but his publicist say he is doing well and should be returning home soon. The actor went into a Los Angeles hospital Friday after falling ill at his home. Publicist Jennifer Allen told the Associated Press “he’s still in the hospital but my understanding is he is doing well and will be going home soon. When, exactly, we have not been told yet.” Garner got his big break in show business when he landed the role of Bret Maverick in the comedy Western show “Maverick” … Continue reading
