American Idol News: Paula’s Blunder

If you watched American Idol last night, you might agree with Simon – it was “officially the strangest show we’ve ever done.” Last night, Ryan Seacrest told everyone that he or she would sing two songs. But, unlike the usual format, they would not hear from the judges until after the second song. Therefore, everyone sang his or her first song and it was a true snoozefest in my opinion. I thought my original favorite, Brooke White, would do great with Neil Diamond since she has a Carol King/Carly Simon feel to her singing. But no, she chose to sing … Continue reading

Saturday Night Live News: A Baby and a Death

A Baby for Amy It has been announced that SNL news anchor Amy Poehler will now be her own Baby Mama. She and hubby Will Arnett have announced they are becoming first time parents, with the baby due in late fall. Poehler, on SNL for the past eight seasons, and actor Arnett have been married since 2003. This must make Poehler’s box office success with Baby Mama, a joint venture with former SNL news anchor Tina Fey, all the sweeter. The movie features Fey as a woman who hires Poehler to carry her child. The movie pulled in an impressive … Continue reading

Did Biggest Loser Go Too Far?

If you watched Biggest Loser this past season, it was a special series – couples! There was a mother/daughter couple, a father/daughter couple, best friends, married couples, and even divorced couple. The divorced couple – Kelly Fields and Paul Marks – came in weighing quite a bit. Kelly weighed in at 271 – the heaviest female on this season. Paul wasn’t the heaviest male, but at 310 and only 5’ 4”, he was certainly at risk. His father and grandfather, both overweight, died before the age of 50. Already 43, Paul was looking to break that cycle. Although he and … Continue reading

Little House on the Prairie

Based on the series of books by Laura Ingalls Wilder, “Little House on the Prairie” was a hit television show from 1974 to 1983, and thanks to the wonders of syndication, is still airing today. I am a huge fan of the books and also enjoyed the show, although there are huge discrepancies between the two. I think you need to enjoy the show on its own and not worry about comparing it to the books. Melissa Gilbert plays our heroine, Laura. She grows up in a small Midwestern town called Walnut Grove, and is surrounded by her loving family. … Continue reading

Is it Really Such a Crime to Eat While Watching TV (Once in a While)?

Alright, I confess—while we DO eat at the dining table fairly regularly, and at the stools at the kitchen counter many mornings, this single parent family also has dinner in front of a movie once a week or so. I know it fits into some awful stereotype and that there are many people who will tell me how horrible it is, but is it REALLY that horrible? I mean, we are sharing the time together, hooting over an episode of “American Idol” or watching a movie we’ve all picked out, and if we happen to be eating homemade pizza or … Continue reading

History Channel Delves into the Library of Congress

The Library of Congress (in my opinion) has to be one of the coolest places in the world. I love books and this is the ultimate for a book lover. It has over 138 million items in its collection. That’s right – I said 138 MILLION. But, the Library of Congress has a treasure trove of cool things other than just books. This includes George Washington’s copy of the Constitution, the first map of the United States, and it even has the contents of Abe Lincoln’s pockets from the night he died. The Library of Congress dates back to April … Continue reading

Idol Gives Back…and Takes Away

This week was the big “American Idol” benefit show, Idol Gives Back. This show is sort of mini telethon that asks for donations to help the poor in both America (including those in Louisiana affected by Hurricane Katrina and living in the Appalachian Mountains) and Africa (including children who have lost parents due to AIDS). The six charities that will receive the already $60 million raised are Children’s Defense Fund, The Children’s Health Fund, The Global Fund, Make It Right, Malaria No More and Save the Children’s U.S. Programs. As usual, the show offered a plethora of stars. The two … Continue reading

Well, That was Quick! TV Shows Cancelled After One Episode

Well, it looks like I will never see Ben Stein dance on television. That was part of the appeal for me of the new reality show “Secret Talents of the Stars.” As it turns out, either the stars didn’t have any secrets or weren’t talented because America was not tuning in. After the first show drew just 4.6 million (I would have thought there would have been at least that many Star Trek fans tuned in just to hear George “Mr. Sulu” Takei sing “On the Road Again”), it was cancelled. However, “Secret Talents of the Stars” is in good … Continue reading

Saving Money on Television

Although unheard of a decade ago, it is not hard to spend thousands of dollars on a television set and hundreds of dollars a month on television programming. Watching television has gone from being luxury entertainment to being a luxury necessity. The average new television costs about $1500, and you can get television units that cost much more than that. Here are some ways to be frugal about your television viewing and have hundreds or even thousands of dollars left over at the end of the year. Forgo the HD everything and get a basic television set. Did you know … Continue reading

Oprah’s Weirdest Day

Yesterday, Michele blogged about how Oprah’s show on Friday would be her saddest day. This is the show in which Oprah would talk about the death of her beloved cocker spaniel, Sophie. While that will indeed be sad, today has surely got to be Oprah’s weirdest show – ever. In fact, it may be the weirdest show ever in the history of talk shows (and I am including Geraldo Rivera and Jerry Springer here!). Today’s show will deal with a man…who is pregnant. No, it is not some freak of nature occurrence and yes, he really is pregnant. Thomas Beatie, … Continue reading
