“Quincy” Sues, Madonna Saves, and Piers Wins

Many of you may not remember Jack Klugman, the star of the television series’ “The Odd Couple” and “Quincy M.E.” I used to love to watch “Quincy M.E.” growing up. During the late 70s/early 80s, “Quincy M.E.” was about as edgy a show as you could find on network television. In the show, Jack Klugman (who played Quincy) was sort of a combination between Hugh Laurie’s “House” and all three CSI teams combined. Each week, Quincy would examine a body, figure out something suspicious was going on, and then solve the crime – all within an hour! Now, at the … Continue reading

Television News: March 23, 2008

One of my favorite shows has been cancelled…again. “Jericho” was cancelled by CBS after its first season due to viewer decline. Of course, the fact that CBS put the show on hiatus during the Christmas holidays didn’t help much. But rabid fans weren’t going to just let “Jericho” go peacefully. They sent over 40,000 pounds of nuts to CBS Entertainment President Nina Tassler’s door. The nuts were a tribute to the line “Nuts” uttered by lead character Jake Green (Skeet Ulrich) in the season finale. After the overwhelming response from fans, CBS decided to give the show a second, shorter … Continue reading

The Death of John Ritter

I know, I know, he died in 2003, but if you think the whole situation surrounding the unexpected death of the much loved sitcom star ended in 2003, you would be wrong. John was on the set of his show “8 Simple Rules” when he collapsed on September 11, 2003. He was taken across the street to the Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center, but died just hours later of an aortic dissection. The problem that keeps this case alive is the doctors treated John for a heart attack. After all, a heart attack had taken his father at the age … Continue reading

Mary Ann’s Busted

First, there was perennial All American girl Valerie Bertinelli admitting that she cheated on husband Eddie Van Halen during their marriage. Now, Dawn Wells, you probably know her better as wholesome as apple pie Mary Ann from “Gilligan’s Island,” has been saddled with six months of unsupervised probation after being caught with marijuana in her car. What is next – a photo of “Three’s Company” good girl Joyce DeWitt smoking crack? Dawn was sentenced to serve five days in jail, pay a fine of $410.50 (how do they come up with that figure?), and placed on the unsupervised probation after … Continue reading

Family TV Programming is Still Popular

When I was a kid, we had four television channels to watch: three networks and PBS. (My parents’ idea of a remote control was telling either me or my brother to turn the knob on the television to change the channel.) Yes, I’m a little old. After seeing yet another commercial for a sitcom that represents a certain racial group as trashy, ignorant and uneducated, my husband and I reflected back upon our own childhood years and the quality programming we found in programs like Little House on the Prairie, The Waltons and The Cosby Show. Let’s face it, quality … Continue reading

The Independent Spirit Awards

Tomorrow is Oscar day and I cannot wait! But tonight, I will be watching the Independent Spirit Awards on the Independent Film Channel (IFC). The Independent Spirit Awards may include some of those honored with Academy Award nominations, but more often than not, those nominated are people from movies of which you may not have even heard. Thus is the spirit of independent films. It seems only fitting that this award show occurs the day before the Oscars, which many in the industry see as a show that often ignores independent films because they often don’t make a lot of … Continue reading

Valerie Bertinelli Dishes the Dirt

She was the epitome of the sweet All American girl next door when she starred on “One Day at a Time,” but even though she was married to her rock star husband for 24 years – a monstrous amount of time by Hollywood standards – Valerie Bertinelli didn’t always play the good girl in real life. In a revealing interview with Oprah Winfrey, Valerie had admitted to cheating on ex-hubby Eddie Van Halen. You can watch the entire interview on Oprah’s show Monday, but to tide you over until then, here are some of the juicy parts. Valerie says that … Continue reading

HD DVD RIP

Toshiba, the manufacturer of the HD DVD format announced yesterday that it will no longer manufacture players with the HD DVD format. This basically ends the extended war between the two high definition DVD formats, HD DVD and BluRay. If you have been following this blog, you already know all about the battle of HD and BluRay, manufactured by Sony. Like a house of cards, movie companies and retail companies announced how they wouldn’t be supporting the HD format. Just last week, both Wal-Mart and Neflix said that they will no longer be carrying anything HD DVD. And just last … Continue reading

Maksim Takes a Break

I am sad to say that Maksim Chmerkovskiy will not be a regular dancer on the upcoming season of “Dancing with the Stars.” His reps told People magazine that the gorgeous dancer would be taking time off, that he “needs a break.” The 28-year-old hoofer had previously been partnered with Laila Ali (who just finished up her first season on “American Gladiators”) and Spice Girl Mel B. It was last December that Maksim told People that he was feeling burned out due to the show’s grueling schedule. He said, “After coming down from two seasons back-to-back, 10 weeks each season … Continue reading
