The Sugar Rush Cometh

It’s Halloween in spring; otherwise known as Easter. Only, instead of going door-to-door to collect sweet treats, kids run around like decapitated chickens hunting for plastic eggs filled with chocolate goodness under bushes, in trees and behind rocks. If parents are lucky, their children will actually make it back to the hunt’s home base with at least a few pieces of uneaten candy to show for their efforts.  The unlucky moms and dads are left to pluck their kids from wherever it is they decide to plant their tiny tushes mid-hunt and picnic from a basket bulging with marshmallow chicks, … Continue reading

Stop Binge Eating – Part 2

Yesterday, I was talking about something I am often guilty of – binge eating!  How do you stop it? One way to stop bingeing is to take smaller bites, enjoy your meal, and extend the time if you can.  Set a timer if needed.  The longer you draw out your meal, the more chance your stomach has to realize how much food is in it and stop you from eating more.  If you don’t believe this, just think back to the last time you eat a lot of food and felt miserable.  You probably ate quicker than your body could … Continue reading

Stop Binge Eating – Part 1

Do you binge eat?  I know I do.  I’ll promise myself that this is it – I am going to stop eating so much and start exercising.  Next thing I know, I am sitting in my recliner, stuffing a pepperoni pizza in my face and watching television.  Not a good plan! But, how can you stop it?  First, you need to realize that some dieticians frown on diets because they are not teaching you healthy lifestyle changes.  If you are thinking of going on the Atkins Diet and sit there thinking “I can never have another piece of bread, ever … Continue reading

Teaching Kids to Eat Healthy

One of the best gifts we can give a child is how to eat healthy. Eating for your health is a habit that will last and benefit your child for a lifetime. The younger you begin the less resistance you will have when it comes to trading in the candy for fruit salad. The number one way to instill healthy eating habits is by displaying healthy eating habits. Nothing will effect your child more than having her see you make proper food choices and by serving healthy foods. Even if you previously had poor eating habits, it is not too … Continue reading

Help For Picky Eaters

One thing I have strived to do as a Mom is instill good eating habits in Hailey. When I was married, this was difficult, my ex husband was a picky eater and Hailey picked up his habits, to this day she will not eat marinara sauce! Being single has given me the opportunity, and many times the need, to figure out how to serve healthy foods that my daughter will eat without having to worry about someone else’s influence on her choices. Like most children Hailey will choose what’s fast food or junk food over what I wish she would … Continue reading

Merging Your Eating Habits

Unless the two of you met at an organic free-range food compound or an all-you-can-eat fried buffet, chances are pretty good that the eating styles of yourself and your spouse when you came into your marriage were different. You may not agree on the types of food you like, or even whether to eat out or at home. Aside from being short order cooks and making different meals or stocking food in separate refrigerators, how do you manage one household with two different approaches to meals? Here are some of the experiences of having two different eating styles, based on … Continue reading

Big Apple Helping Fitness Fanatics Take a Bite Out of Healthier Living

If you travel around New York City via the subway you may have been pleasantly surprised to see expletive-free reading material posted in select cars this week. The new additions come courtesy of the city Health Department and while they may not make you as sick as the graffiti they help cover up, the posters still have some riders clutching their stomachs. After reading that your burrito lunch (complete with sour cream and guacamole) contained more than half the calories you should eat in a day, you should be feeling ill. The informative posters that now hang in about 1,000 … Continue reading

Does Snacking Have to be a Bad Thing?

I was brought up in a world where snacking was the enemy. I remember we were allowed one morning snack and one afternoon snack and it was supposed to be no eating or snacking before dinner. I confess that I have been much more lenient with my own children’s eating habits and since I keep plenty of healthy snacking possibilities around the house, I don’t really worry about snacking—even right before dinner. Probably the junkiest thing we have in our house is microwave popcorn (and I cannot help but trust Paul Newman–even with microwave popcorn.) Add that to the pretzels … Continue reading

Cruises Getting Healthy? When Were They Not?

My husband and I were married on a cruise. It was a fantastic all-inclusive getaway. I remember that the biggest attraction for certain Baby Boomers in our party was the 24-hour food service. If food was being served, they had to be there. It didn’t matter if it was breakfast or a midnight buffet. (If we missed a meal, they felt it was important to tell us everything that we missed at the following meal.) Now cruise lines are trying to make things healthier for their passengers. They’re hoping to lure health-conscious baby boomers (not my parents) and others who … Continue reading

Coping With a “Health Food” Kick

Just when I think I have seen it all with my three kids, they throw me for a loop. I know that one of the fun things about kids and teenagers, in particular, is that they are forever coming up with new phases and philosophies to try out on their road to adulthood and their own unique version of independence. Just when I thought I had seen just about every version of teenage identity experimentation, my youngest has decided this summer to change his life style–he is now on a health and exercise “regime”… As many of you know, part … Continue reading
