No Brown Foods, Please!

My father recently had some dental work done that left him very sore in the mouth. The pain was bad enough that he was on a diet of mostly mush for a few days! Luckily, he’s a fan of certain mushy foods; for as long as I can remember, my dad has loved Cream of Wheat hot cereal. (I like it with accessories like dried fruit or maple syrup, personally!) So he ate a lot of Cream of Wheat while his mouth was recovering. But when my mom served up the first bowl, it prompted this comment from my father: … Continue reading

Involving Kids in Fall Cleanup

Around our house, fall yard work is a complete family affair. Everyone is expected to do his or her part, even the youngest. While this may see like cheap labor (in fact it sometimes takes more time when kids help then when they don’t) it is actually a way of spending time together as a family while doing what needs to be done. Involving kids in fall clean up also builds valuable life skills. It can build self-confidence, a feeling of having a place in the world and being important in the family, and a sense of responsibility. Tasks such … Continue reading

Anatomy of A Frugal Kid 2

I’m continuing my examination of a typical frugal kid, as he appeared this morning while waiting for the bus stop. You can see that it doesn’t take a lot of money to have a healthy and happy kid. If you missed the first post, click here: Anatomy of A Frugal Kid. Now, let us continue with the torso. In the backpack is a new lunch box that I purchased at the end of September for only $2. It is insulated and a name brand. In it, you’ll find a homemade lunch that includes items such as from scratch banana bread, … Continue reading

Can Dramatic Weight Loss Be Maintained?

I’ve seen countless talk shows and TV commercials showing various different celebrity-types who have lost twenty, thirty, fifty pounds . . . and just months later, seen their pictures in the tabloids, having put the weight back on. This phenomenon holds true for us regular folk, too—it’s just that more attention is paid to celebrities who “fail” at their diets because they’ve got the eyes of the paparazzi on them. For those who have lost a hundred pounds or more, the tendency is the same—they lose the weight and then for some reason, put the weight back on. Why is … Continue reading

Organic for Health – Sandy Powers

In the new book “Organic for Health,” author Sandy Powers shares her own story of sickness and healing. In 2005, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. However, her treatment was complicated by the fact that her liver enzymes were three times higher than normal. Her doctor feared that the surgery for the breast cancer would damage the liver, but Sandy feared the cancer more than the liver. She proceeded to have the mastectomy needed, but decided against chemotherapy and radiation because of the possibility of harm to her liver. Every time she had her enzymes tested, they were dangerously high. … Continue reading

Dehydration = Bad

Every so often, I bring up hydration and dehydration here in the fitness blog. It’s important to talk about it, to keep it forefront in your mind and to know what to do or not do with regards to hydration. Summer time is a particularly important time to focus on this issue because we spend so much time outside and in the heat and doing things that will dehydrate us if we’re not careful. For example, my daughter would stay in the pool all day if I let her, but I also make sure we have plenty of water with … Continue reading

Winter and the Word of Wisdom
