Curbing Obesity In Children

I read an article today that said that in a study of 8717 children between the ages of 4 and 9 showed higher rates of obesity in girls from single parent families. They said those same girls watched more televisions, ate more foods high in fat and sugar and less fruits and vegetable than girls in dual parent households. They authors of this study were quick to point out that this doesn’t mean single parents are doing a bad job, just that this is the result of the stress of single parenting, especially single parenting girls. Girls overall are more … Continue reading

Nutritious Back-to-School Treats

Healthy doesn’t have to mean horrible tasting. Of course, trying to explain to your 8-year-old why you are filling his lunchbox with carrots and celery sticks instead of chips and chocolate (for the 18th time in less than 24 hours) isn’t without its challenges. Instead of battling with your child over what’s inside his lunchbox, consider experimenting with nutritious snack options that taste great, such as: *Popcorn (pop your own – it’s cheaper and healthier) *Dried fruit *Trail Mix or GORP *Peanut butter or cheese crackers *Fruit muffins *Banana bread or carrot and nut cake *Granola bars *Pancakes made with … Continue reading

A Recipe for Healthy School Snacks

We are a brown bag family. When it comes to school lunches, we prefer to send our schol-age child with a homemade lunch, and he prefers that, too. Our reasons for providing him with a home made lunch are: it is less expensive, I can better control the nutrition and steer away from colors and preservatives, there is a short amount of time to eat lunch and he doesn’t want to spend part of it waiting in line, and he is always hungry after a school lunch–complaining that there is not enough food. A typical lunch brought from home may … Continue reading

Trail Mix Day Fun

Today is National Trail Mix Day. (Isn’t it amazing how everything has a day?) Mixing up trail mix can be a fun thing to do with your children. It’s also a great snack to bring along for Labor Day picnics and parties. What I love about trail mix is that there are so many great flavor combinations. In other words, it’s hard to get trail mix wrong. It’s also a great cooking project for kids. Younger children can scoop, measure, and mix. Older ones can mix up this snack on their own, and come up with their own flavor combinations. … Continue reading

Make It Easy To Eat Healthy!

Let’s face it: junk food is easy. A trip through the drive-through on a busy day? Easy. Ripping open a package of cookies at snack time? Easy. Sugary donuts or other breakfast sweets? Easy. Eating healthy can be a challenge just because it isn’t always easy! Here are some tips to make it easier for you and your family to choose healthy foods. Stock the freezer. Keep easy meal starters, like turkey burgers and chicken breast strips in the freezer so you can whip up a tasty (and healthy) meal without a lot of effort. Like to grill? Make things … Continue reading

Romance Granola

This healthy, home made granola is easy to make and oh so yummy! You can use it as a morning cereal, or eat it out of hand as a snack. I’ll separate a portion of it and mix in a few chocolate chips for the kids. It is loaded with omega 3s and other good fats for proper brain development and a healthy heart. This was my very first attempt at making granola completely from scratch, and I was so pleased at the results. The recipe makes about 14 cups of granola, which was gone in my house in a … Continue reading

Choose Fruit for Healthy Kid or Adult Snacks

If you have kids, then I’m sure you’ve heard, “I’m hungry” quite a few times, right? I don’t know about you, but I often forget that snack time is coming up, and, of course, my child has not forgotten about it. I usually give her a few choices for her snack, and she’ll usually choose the same ol’ thing, goldfish crackers and raisins. While raisins are a great snack choice and very healthy for her to eat, the goldfish crackers are not so much, and I really should find a healthier alternative to them, for instance whole wheat or whole … Continue reading

Dieting Cheap: Healthy and Inexpensive Snacks

Why is it that today diets can be so expensive? If you are eating less, shouldn’t you be spending less as well? Unfortunately, programs like Jenny Craig and Weight Watchers have proved otherwise. Pay to join, and then pay an additional bundle of cash for the food. The reason that programs with their own heat-and-eat meals can be successful is because they focus a lot on portion control. By packaging only the amount of food that your body really needs, you can more easily limit the amount you are eating at each meal. I am not trying to say that … Continue reading
