Silent Lunch

What’s the lunchtime routine in your home? For many stay-at-homes moms with spouses who work outside the house it’s a nice chance to spend one-on-one time with their young children. For those moms who have school-age children, it’s a chance to enjoy a quiet meal alone. Most days I enjoy a “girls-only” lunch with my two-year-old daughter. Occasionally, she will help me prepare sandwiches and cut up (she uses a butter knife) fruits and veggies. After the meal is prepared we sit down and chat about life. You know, why apples are red AND green and oranges are only… well, … Continue reading

Home For The Holidays: A Family Tradition That Helps Our Troops

What’s your family’s favorite holiday tradition? I told you about some of ours in a previous blog, and I also provided some ideas in case you were looking to add a few new ones to your holiday repitoie. For many families a favorite holiday tradition is simply slowing down long enough to bake up a batch of cookies. It can be especially fun and productive when you allow your kids take the reigns in the decorating department. You may be surprised at how much children can learn participating in a simple task such as baking cookies. For instance, think about … Continue reading

Sorry, Right Number: Rude Call Waiting

Is there anyone who hasn’t seen the old film noir classic, ”Sorry, Wrong Number” with Barbara Stanwyck and Burt Lancaster? Made in the 1940s, the film weaves a clever tale of a woman who overhears plans for her own murder over an accidental cross of telephone wires. She commands the operator, whom she refers to as “a good woman who probably doesn’t understand,” to re-connect her to the number she reached in error and not the one she was trying to dial in the first place (her husband’s office number). Even in the movies, this cannot be done and it … Continue reading

House Rules

What kinds of rules do you have in your home? Every home has rules of personal behavior and things of that nature, but what about specific rules regarding how your home, furnishings, and particular spaces can be used? My husband and I always want our children to feel relaxed at home, but we finally had to set down some basic ground rules. One example is that the children are not allowed to eat in the living room. We were pretty flexible on this issue before, but kids tend to get a little careless, so we had to end it. We’re … Continue reading

Home and Family: Privacy

Kids grow up so fast. One minute they want you by their side, and almost the next instant, they are trying to find ways to keep you out of their rooms. While I don’t believe a parent must observe strict privacy rules, such as never entering a child’s room, I do believe we need to respect our children’s privacy. It doesn’t hurt to knock before entering a child’s bedroom, after all, he or she may be undressed. We want our kids to knock before entering our bedroom, so it makes sense to show them the same courtesy. We also need … Continue reading

Home and Family Severe Weather Tips

Severe weather threats can include downpours, flooding, powerful lightning and thunderstorms, violent winds, damaging hail and of course tornadoes. Any of these can become a threat to your home and your family. The best way to keep your home and family safe is to know what to expect and to know how to react when storms strike. Most severe storms and tornadoes occur in the afternoon … Continue reading
