The Search for Silent Space at a Hotel

How many times have you cursed the people in the hotel room next to yours for making too much noise while you were trying to catch some zzz’s? Is it too much to ask for a quiet hotel room these days? According to travel experts, hotel stays ruined by raucous neighbors was one of the top complaints travelers had in 2007. So what does it take to be guaranteed a little quiet time? Apparently, a bit of legwork on your part. Travel experts say if you are that serious about finding silent space you should select a hotel in a … Continue reading

Hot Hotel Deals in Hawaii for 2008

If one of your resolutions for 2008 involves traveling to Hawaii you are in luck. The Outrigger hotel group just released its package deals for the upcoming year and the savings are substantial. For those of you who have never visited the Islands, Outrigger hotels are everywhere. I would describe them as moderate accommodations both price wise and for overall service. They are by no means as ritzy as the Four Seasons, but they certainly are comfortable and conveniently located. (P.S. You’re in Hawaii—if you are spending a ton of time in your hotel room then something is wrong with … Continue reading

Historic Arkansas Hotel Reopens for Business

If you are looking for luxury in Little Rock, Arkansas, I have good news for you. After two years and more than $24 million worth of renovations the historic Capital Hotel is open for business. The downtown property is welcoming back guests in high style. If you are a loyal Capital patron don’t fret about the hotel losing its Victorian charm. That’s still intact. It just added a few extra amenities to go along with it. The historic hotel has added modern touches, such as wireless Internet and flat-screen TVs and it’s also sporting 236 new windows. In addition, its … Continue reading

Travel Tidbits: Incentives for Early Hotel Check Out and Denver’s Newest Ritz

Let’s face it; there aren’t many hotels that willingly embrace guests who ask for a late check out—-free of charge. In fact, an increasing amount of lodgings are now imposing steep fees for guests who want to extend their stays by a few hours. Which is why I was not the least bit surprised when I heard a Florida hotel was offering incentives for guests who leave the property early. The historic Don CeSar Beach Resort in St. Petersburg, Florida just introduced a new incentive program for guests. If you check out by 10 a.m. you’ll be entered to win … Continue reading

Ocean Front Hotel Seeks New Beach

If you book a reservation at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel and Resort on the Hawaiian Island of Oahu you won’t have a problem getting an ocean-view room, but don’t expect to see much more than water. The Sheraton has no beach. For years waves from the Pacific have been eating away at the sand, but appears now hotel managers are looking to change that. Hotel exectuives just announced they plans to extend T-shaped rock barriers into the water and pump the shoreline full of sand. Doing so would add about 38,000 square feet to the beach at the rear of … Continue reading

Affordable Hotels

Affordable… but small. In a previous blog I told you about the new option tired travelers have at some of the world’s busiest airports—-Pod Hotels. This week a brand of pod hotels called Yotels opened in Terminal 4 at London’s Heathrow Airport. The company, which launched its first property in London’s Gatwick Airport this summer, charges about $50 for four hours in a standard single “cabin” and $115 for an overnight stay. Yotel also offers a double cabin for families, which costs about $80 for four hours and $170 for a night. If you are looking for budget accommodations these … Continue reading

Walt Disney World Swan

Like the Walt Disney World Dolphin, the Swan is not owned by Disney. It is on Disney property but owned and operated by Westin Hotels. The Dolphin and the Swan are both located on Crescent Lake. As a guest at the Swan or Dolphin, you can take advantage of Extra Magic Hours and the Walt Disney Word transportation system. The Swan and the Dolphin, are connected by an outdoor bridge. From this bridge, you can catch a boat to Epcot or Disney-MGM Studios. Bus service is provided to all other Disney resorts and attractions. Other Disney resort guest perks are … Continue reading

The Nicest Jail You’ll Ever Spend the Night In

How many visitors to Boston can say they paid to sleep in a jail cell? Okay, former jail cell. Beantown’s newly opened Liberty Hotel was once home to some of the city’s most notorious prisoners. Now, for $320 a night (minimum) you can catch some zzz’s near iron-railing balconies where guards used to stand watch over inmates more than 100 years ago. What a difference a few decades can make. The 156-year-old stone structure is now home to a luxury hotel—the product of a 5-year, $150 million renovation. And you can forget about looking for remnants of dingy décor, the … Continue reading

Untraditional Out-of-Town Lodging

There’s a saying: “You have to spend money to make money.” (Lottery ticket, anyone?) And I have a feeling it’s a line used pretty often by the owner of a unique Florida hotel. The property is situated in Gainesville near the University of Florida’s football stadium and does brisk business during the fall season. So brisk, in fact, that it began selling—-not renting—-its rooms. Some call it the perfect answer for those special event weekends (like football games) when hotel rooms are practically non-existent. You buy a hotel condominium for a guaranteed place to stay and let the hotel rent … Continue reading

Travel Tidbits: Visiting “Sox” and a Hotel That’ll Knock Your Socks Off

VISTING “SOX” If you‘ve never been to Boston you don’t know what you’re missing. From the world-class shopping to the numerous kid friendly attractions, the historic city is a favorite vacation destination for millions. But, never one to rest on its laurels, Beantown is giving visitors one more reason to travel to Massachusetts. She is a tribute to the Boston Red Sox and a nod to the team’s four-game World Series sweep of the Colorado Rockies. No clue? Okay, she stands 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighs a gaunt 154 pounds. She also has long, lanky legs that she … Continue reading
