Scripture Study – 1 Nephi 16:33-36

Nephi’s strong steel bow broke and the other bows in the company had lost their spring, and the family began to perish for lack of food. Nephi made another bow out of wood and inquired of his father where he should go to find food. Having success in his hunt, Nephi returned to the camp and all were fed. 33. And it came to pass that we did again take our journey, traveling nearly the same course as in the beginning; and after we had traveled for the space of many days we did pitch our tents again, that we … Continue reading

Asking Heavenly Father for Help

In the blog I wrote the other day about humility and asking God for help, I wrote, referring to Heavenly Father: “He is there, just waiting for you to humble yourself enough to ask for help.” Why is it that He waits for us to ask Him for help? If He knows everything, why doesn’t He know we need help and just give it? In contemplating this question, many reasons sprang to mind. 1. The greatest tool He gave us to use here in our mortal lives is free agency. He does not force any man to heaven, and He … Continue reading

Humbled, or Picked On?

When you think of the word “humble,” what does that bring to mind? I used to think it meant “lowly,” “downtrodden,” “having low self-esteem.” However, God has asked us to be humble, and He doesn’t want us to feel bad about ourselves. What does He want? He wants us to turn to Him in times of grief. He wants us to acknowledge that we are powerless on our own and that we need Him constantly. That is the true definition of humility – to turn to God for help and to recognize His hand in all things, knowing that He … Continue reading

Weight a Minute! — Seeking a Higher Power

I’ve held my weight steady at 264.2 all this week. Is that the weight I want? Of course not. But I was up to 269.0 at the beginning of this month, and it fluctuated up and down like crazy for the first two weeks. I’m pretty delighted that it hasn’t budged for a week. It’s progress. Today I’d like to talk with you about a concept I have found to be invaluable in my journey. I blogged a while back about how I’ve been looking for love in all the wrong places, turning to food instead of to God or … Continue reading

Mature Christians

You can be a Christian your whole life and still not be mature in your faith. Fact is we will spend our whole lives with the opportunity to grow and still not have achieved the perfection of Christ. Thankfully God isn’t looking for perfect people, just hearts that long to know Him and follow Him. I’ve been a Christian a long time but I would not necessarily consider myself mature in faith. I am impressionable and vulnerable to temptation that can cause me to backslide into old habits. I want to grow and mature but the truth is, I lack … Continue reading

Lessons We Can Learn From Children

As adults with such sophistication we may believe we have a great advantage over our children. After all, we’ve been around longer to learn how this world works. With age comes wisdom right? If this is true, then why does the Bible put such great emphasis on children? “At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying ‘Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?’ Then Jesus called a little child to Him, set him in the midst of them, and said, ‘Assuredly I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by … Continue reading

Aren’t We All Hypocrites?

Hypocrisy has long been one of the reasons that people have avoided going to church. When I hear a disillusioned person say something like, “I don’t go to church, they’re all full of hypocrites.” I think, “Isn’t that where they should be?” When you get right down to it, we are ALL hypocrites. Who hasn’t said to her child, “Remember to share.” and then made a treat for herself and enjoyed it without ever offering some of it to her spouse or child? Who hasn’t admonished her child, “Don’t push.” and then plowed over another person or even her own … Continue reading

The Big Impact of the Little Things

There are some many things good people do in their lives everyday they that probably do not even think about because these things are simply part of who they are. These things make up the character of the man or woman. What if this “good person” is a Christian? There are qualities of their character they should possess as a man or woman living for the Lord. These little things or qualities should be part of who the Christian man or woman is. These little things should come naturally (or eventually come naturally) to the Christian. These little things a … Continue reading
