Preparing for the Storm 2

(Note, although this post was written yesterday, fluctuating power caused me to make the decision to stay offline and keep my computer safe.) Have you been watching the weather for today? If you live along the east coast, you’re probably concerned about severe weather coming your way. Heavy rain, high winds and flash floods are all possibilities for many areas. In my previous post, Preparing for the Storm, I talked a little bit about how the severe weather may be affecting us soon. At the moment, our are resembles a tropical rain forest. There has been some steady, feathery rain … Continue reading

Preparing for the Storm

When you live in the woods, you have to be prepared. Gustav and Hanna have been in the news lately, as everyone pays close attention to the hurricane and severe storm watches and warnings. I have been no exception. The little weather alert has been popping up on my browser for the last two days, warning me of severe storms with high winds and possible flooding in my area. While I am not too concerned that we will find ourselves in a situation that requires evacuation, I still need to pay attention to the weather reports, especially because of those … Continue reading

Travel Alert: Hurricane Flossie Headed For Hawaii

Right now my parents are preparing for the worst. They live on the Big Island of Hawaii just miles from where Hurricane Flossie is scheduled to make landfall. Currently, the storm is packing 120 mph sustained winds and is on course to hit south of the Big Island Tuesday. (Not to mention the fact that a 5.3 magnitude earthquake just struck the Big Island a few hours ago.) Forecasters are urging residents and visitors to Hawaii to be prepared for heavy rain and damaging winds. Insured Losses Due To Hurricane.

Hurricane Katrina was the worst natural disaster the insurance industry has ever managed. The number of claims exceeds the previous record of more than two million made to cover losses in 2004 from the four Florida storms. There has been a great deal of press coverage about the way Insurance companies have handled claims. Several stories have aired showing families who have been denied insurance for losses they suffered from Hurricane Katrina. The issue is that Homeowners insurance policies have never covered losses due to flood and this Hurricane resulted in major flood damage. The typical homeowners policy covers damage … Continue reading

Preparing for Heat After a Hurricane

When you are preparing for a hurricane, it is important to plan for the heat, which follows a hurricane. Heat exhaustion can be deadly and you need to be prepared to combat it. People are not used to dealing with heat anymore. There are air conditioners, fans, and the wonderful electricity to make sure that these are working at all times. After a hurricane you will often lose these for sometime. You will not have the luxury of an air conditioned home. You need to prepare now to combat the heat. 1) The first thing you should do is to … Continue reading

An Unforgettable Family Vacation

It’s been the top story on network news programs and featured in newspaper articles around the country: “Spring Breakers Rebuilding the Big Easy,” “College Students Lend Spring Break Energy to Hurricane Relief Efforts.” The news of college students from around the nation turning away from familiar notions of Spring Break (partying, sleeping in and hitting the beach) in favor of lending a hand in the Gulf Coast region devastated by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita inspired me to look into ways that we (like these college students) could devote a family vacation to helping those in need. A recent survey revealed … Continue reading

Review: Extreme Makeover Home Edition

ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition airs on Sunday evenings, at 8:00 (7:00 Central), but this week on the special Thursday episode, the team visited Biloxi, Mississippi, which was devastated by Hurricane Katrina. Even now, more than six months later, the nightmare those people are living is still in evidence. The views shown during Monday’s episode were just shocking. Heartbreaking doesn’t begin to describe it. While I’m sure a lot of work has been done despite appearances, to say that there is much more to be done would be an understatement. Thankfully, Ty Pennington and his team showed up to lend … Continue reading
