Runners Collapse in Race Due to Lack of Water

This past week the city I live in, Milwaukee, hosted its “Rock ‘n Sole” event, a half marathon and 10K race that is sponsored by the largest musical festival around, “Summerfest.” The temperature was 85 degrees and the humidity was high. But runners are used to this and so they manage to get through it. That is, if they remain hydrated. What was supposed to be a day of fun and fitness turned into medical emergencies as more than 20 runners had to be taken to a hospital. All required IVs for hydration. There was an additional 50 runners who … Continue reading

Let’s Review Hydration Rules

Last summer I wrote an article on hydration and it’s time to review those rules especially after the radio show tragedy that occurred when a mom died from drinking so much water during a radio contest to win a Nintendo Wii for her children. Hydration is really important for your health and your fitness goals. So as the days are getting ready to heat up and we’re going to want to do our best to promote good health through the hotter months of the year, let’s talk about hydration and what we need to do to maintain our summertime fitness. … Continue reading

Tip of the Day- It’s No Soda Day!

As I’ve mentioned before, I’m not a big soda drinker. I’ll occasionally sip a soda when I’m out to dinner, but mostly I find the little bubbles annoying and the syrup too sweet. So, this one isn’t really as big of a problem for me as some things are. But here’s the low down on soft drinks. In the year 2000, 15 billion gallons of soda pop were sold in the United States. This averages out to a 12 ounce serving every day for every man woman and child. Yikes! Take a mental inventory. Do you know how much soda … Continue reading

Raspberry Water – A Cool and Refreshing Alternative

Do you drink the recommended 6 to 8 glasses of water a day? Do you drink a half-ounce of water per pound of body weight? Do you look at water and wrinkle your nose because water treatment has long since removed the refreshing taste of water for you? Would you rather drink a soda than a glass a water because frankly, soda tastes better despite the fact that you know it’s not as good for you as water is? Flavored water may be just the alternative you have been waiting for. I’ve found flavored water more and more often at … Continue reading

Fitness Tips: Healthy Mistakes

The title sounds like an oxymoron, I know. But there are a lot of healthy mistakes we all make and the scary thing is, we don’t even recognize them as mistakes when we do them. Mistake Number One: Sleeping in on the Weekends We get up early all week long, so turning off the alarm and just sleeping in a few extra hours on the weekend sounds like a great plan. Unfortunately, most people who sleep in late when they get up early the rest of the week face a problem called sleep inertia – they are groggy and have … Continue reading

Personal Value: Your Health is Everything

Your personal health is one of the most valuable things you possess. Throughout our teens and twenties, it’s pretty normal to take our health for granted. After all, if we’re injured – we bounce back pretty quickly. Losing weight doesn’t seem to be that hard and getting well takes almost no time at all. For the majority of us, the last things we’re thinking about when we’re in our twenties is heart disease, diabetes or arthritis. In fact, it’s not at all uncommon to decide to lose ten pounds and shed them quickly just by putting forth a little effort. … Continue reading

Remember, you need to be sure to hydrate before, during and after your workout. Set aside about 30 to 35 minutes. Water the H20 Solution

Hi, my name is Heather Long. I write for the Fitness and Marriage Blog primarily here at Families.Com. But because weight loss is an issue that I am intimately familiar with, I wanted to share some of my experiences, my frustrations, my triumphs and my setbacks. I’ve done a lot of diets over the years, I’ve done deprivation diets like South Beach and Atkins, I’ve done the moderation diets like Weight Watchers and I’ve done portion control like Lean & Fit. In the end, I never seem to latch onto a diet plan that delivers the guaranteed weight loss. Like … Continue reading

Exercise Tips for Hot Days

I find it entirely amusing to be writing about this on a day when it’s 32 degrees outside in Texas. Yep, here it is the end of March and we who have been blessed with 90-degree days in January are freezing at the moment. Go figure. But anyone who lives in Texas knows that this cold period is not going to last. So here’s some tips for keeping up your exercise routine as it starts to warm up outside and a few warnings about the dangers of overheating and dehydration. When you exercise in intense humidity, especially when it’s hot … Continue reading
