Professional, Expert or Novice

As a home business owner, it can take a little time to figure out how we identify ourselves in our work world. Many of us are used to a traditional job where we are given a title and a job description and it is easy for us to explain what we do and to understand for ourselves whether we are a professional or where we are along the ladder of knowledge and experience. When we start our own home business, we may wonder whether we can present ourselves as an expert or whether or not we are professional–especially when so … Continue reading

Does Your Web Site Have a “Culture”?

By now, you probably know that I think unique is good when it comes to a home business and how we market and promote ourselves. In my opinion, we don’t want to look and sound and seem like everyone else and this goes for our web sites too. If your business web site looks like a copy or a template of hundreds of other web sites, you might not be making the most of your online presence. I think that a web site should have an “image” and a “culture” that lets people know what you about and helps separate … Continue reading

We Can TRY Not to be Too Dorky

As a rule, I do not try purposefully to embarrass my kids (which is more than I think I can say for them); in general, I try to be solid, reasonable, and not too much of an out-of-touch dork, but I think single parents can get confused and the boundaries can get blurred–we might end up either trying too hard to be our child’s “buddy” or we may get so involved in our own life that we come across as embarrassing and dorky. Of course, as our children become teenagers, they are supposed to find their parents a bit out … Continue reading

Enhance Your Image

Okay, let’s talk a little bit about your business image. I know that for a small, home-based business it may seem silly to talk about image—after all, many of us get up in the morning and work in our pajamas! Image? You’ve got to be kidding! But, even if you do work in your pajamas, or at midnight, or without taking a shower or even seeing most of the people you do business with—your business still has an image, and paying some attention to that image is an important part of marketing and doing business. It might help to separate … Continue reading

Value or Visual? What “Gets” Customers?

I have sat in on more than a few discussions about what it really takes to capture the interest of a prospective customer. Usually, the debate comes down to two approaches—value or visuals. Value, of course, meaning that prospective customers are price conscious first and foremost and will respond to good prices, sales, and value. Others argue, that we are becoming increasingly “visual” and that prospective customers respond to flashy, witty, colorful ads or need to see good images of the product before they will be tempted to make a purchase. Which is it for your business? I do think … Continue reading

Do You Feel Sexy?

Sometimes, the issue is not one of lack of attraction for our spouses. Sometimes, it’s all about not feeling very attractive ourselves. This may stem from physical issues regarding personal appearance, health, weight gain, rapid weight loss, or an assortment of other concerns, but sometimes it can also be emotional. If you don’t feel good about yourself as a person, or don’t particularly like the man or woman inside, you’re not likely to feel as if you’re attractive to others. On the other hand, it may not be self-image, but the image you feel the other person sees. If your … Continue reading

What’s In The Chocolate?

What’s in the chocolate? That’s what I asked after hearing about two incidents involving the sinfully sweet treat. The first… some call a chocolate miracle. No, it’s not an invention that turns broccoli into fudge. Rather, workers at a California chocolate company say they discovered a 2-inch column of chocolate drippings that they believe bears a striking resemblance to the Virgin Mary. (To see a picture click here.) For the past few days workers at Bodega gourmet chocolates have spent their break time hovering over the tiny figure; honoring it as they would any other statute of Jesus’ mother. Some … Continue reading

So you want to buy a treadmill …

… and you have a lot of questions. Good. Here comes my attempt to help you sort out what your options are and how you can make your decision making a little easier. We talked a couple of days ago about Setting Up A Home Gym. Today we’re going to narrow the focus of our discussion and talk about shopping for a treadmill. If you are anything like me, when you first considered buying a treadmill, few brand names probably leapt to mind. You may also think that treadmills are pretty much alike, so it may be hard to decide … Continue reading
