Picky Eaters

Do you have a picky eater in your fur family? I do. My girl Lally Beeber is SUCH a picky eater! This is how our morning breakfast goes: I fix breakfast for Moose and Lally. Moose’s dish is set in the kitchen. Moose starts to eat. Lally’s dish is set in the hallway. Lally sniffs her food and walks away. I sit down to “protect” her dish from Moose. Lally may come back and sniff again. Lally curls up at the far end of the hallway and pretends to sleep. Moose finishes his breakfast in 17 seconds flat and comes … Continue reading

Day Trip–A Game with Meaning

This day trip really won’t take the entire day. However, I feel compelled to share it with you in hopes you will take advantage of the opportunity. It’s a chance to witness the “thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.” A chance to watch friendly competition between players that you may be surprised to see hitting the hardwood. And a chance to reflect on how much we take for granted. These opportunities were presented to me when I was invited to take a trip to watch a weekly basketball game at our county’s Association for Retarded Citizens Community Center. … Continue reading

Projects to Keep Kids Entertained

Okay, we all have those days when we are extra busy and the kids seem to be extra bored. These ideas will help keep little ones busy while you work on grown up projects. Make a Poster Give each of your children a piece of poster board and have them create a poster. Think of a theme or have the kids come up with one if you like. If not, just let them create whatever they choose, as long as both sides of the poster board are filled. They can use crayons, colored pencils, markers, stickers, or anything you allow … Continue reading

Make an Activity Kit

How often do you and your kids get stuck waiting for long periods of time at the doctor’s or dentist’s office, or outside school, sports, or dance classes? Well, now you can make restless waiting a thing of the past when you and your kids make an activity kit. An activity kit will keep children entertained in the car as well as any waiting room. Detective Party Game

Do you have some budding detectives in your house? Then this is the game for them. It’s a great party game, and works well for adults, too. Clear a large space to make sure everyone has room to move around. Better yet, try to do this game outside. Choose one person to be the detective. That person has to leave the room (or hide behind a tree, if … Continue reading

Hop of the Penguins Game

In honor of the movie March of the Penguins (which is a great movie to see with your kids, by the way, if you haven’t already), I offer this game, called Hop of the Penguins. I first found this game in Family Fun’s book, Boredom Busters (Disney, 2002). The endearing thing about this game is that it came from a real event in the animal kingdom – penguins having fun. According to the book, when researchers first observed penguins hopping aboard ice floes and going for a ride, they figured it was to avoid predators or some other practical thing. … Continue reading

If you don’t have any CDs lying around, you can purchase a small package of blank discs for just a few dollars or ask friends for those that he or she doesn’t use. If/Then Party Game

The If/Then game is a hilarious game any large group can play. It’s perfect for a family gathering. I’ve played this with my family at kids’ birthday parties, family dinners and with friends during visits. All you need to do to prepare is cut a bunch of slips of paper big enough to write half a sentence on, and gather some pens and pencils. Pass out two slips of paper and a pen or pencil to each person. Pair little people with someone who can help them write. On one piece of paper, everyone writes the first half of a … Continue reading
