Study Finds Link Between Depression and Premature Babies

A new study, about premature babies that shows a link between symptoms of depression in pregnant mothers and premature babies, was published yesterday in the medical journal, Human Reproduction. The study from Kaiser Permanente surveyed hundreds of pregnant patients during their early weeks of pregnancy, using a questionnaire that measured depressive symptoms. Almost half of the women showed severe or significant symptoms of depression. Depression in women who are expecting is more common than you might think. It is a treatable condition, and women should be aware that ignoring the symptoms may very well lead to to premature delivery, according … Continue reading

How Safe is Our Baby Formula?

With all of the news coming from China about tainted baby formula, you might be wondering about the safety of infant formula in the United States or Europe. How safe is it? Let’s have a discussion. First, in the way of a disclaimer, I am big believer in providing a baby exclusively with breast milk. I personally feel that it is the best way to feed a baby and also the safest way to feed a baby, and that most women could and should breast feed their infants without much exception. I also believe that parents should have a choice … Continue reading

Mothers Determine How Well Father Takes Care of Baby

When it comes to how involved fathers are in caring for their infants, it seems that moms are the gatekeepers. According to a study published in the Journal of Family Psychology this past June, mothers play a critical role in determining how much and how well a father takes care of his infant. The study took a look at 97 families who had infants. After accessing numerous factors, such as what the parents believed about gender and paternal roles, the study found an interesting result. How much the mother encouraged the father to care for the infant was the single … Continue reading

In the summer, especially in some parts of the world, air conditioning seems a necessity. Hot and humid temperatures make us all uncomfortable. Household Swallowing Hazards

Babies have a tendency to put everything in their mouths. And while we, as parents, are diligent about baby proofing our homes, sometimes things get missed, such as a small toy from an older child, loose change that has fallen out of someone’s pocket, a stray piece of lint that looks particularly interesting, etc. While many of these objects may not be choking hazards, they still aren’t things you want you baby to ingest. Here are the most common household hazards that a baby might swallow and some information on whether or not you should start to panic. Coins There … Continue reading

Baby Blog Week in Review: June 16th Through June 22nd

June 16th was a very special day for me. That is the day that my first baby was born. And while he is now an active seven-year-old with a younger brother and sister, I still remember the days when it was just the two of use together for most of the day, and I had so much to learn about babies. And now with my youngest still a baby, I find that there is still a lot to discover. I hope you will spend time with me and this blog, as we find out together. My Obsession with Baby Feet

Let’s face it, babies are cute even when they fill up their diapers. We all know that. But when it comes to baby feet, I am completely obsessed. I just love little baby feet. They are cute, compact and unlike adult feet, adorable. I love the little toes and the little flat arches that kick out in excitement. And yes, I even love the smell. People often talk about that great baby smell that you get when taking a whiff of a freshly washed warm little baby head, but I prefer the little feet. For one thing, there are two … Continue reading

Ask a Baby Blogger: Can a Baby Be Allergic to Breastmilk?

Question: I was told that my baby was fussy and spitting up so much because he was allergic to my milk. This doesn’t really make sense to me–can you explain it better? I hate to be the one to tell you this, but being allergic to breastmilk is not really possible. Babies simply are not allergic to their own mother’s milk. Healthy babies are designed to eat and what they eat is mother’s milk. Plain and simple. Anyone who tells you to switch to formula because your baby is allergic to your milk is not someone that you should be … Continue reading

Ask a Baby Blogger: Can Too Much Exercise Make Your Milk Sour?

Several have posed this question to me recently so I thought I would take some time today in the baby blog to answer it. It used to be that conventional wisdom told mothers not to exercise while breastfeeding. When you exercise your body increases the production of lactic acid which would make your milk taste sour to the baby and would either upset her stomach or cause her to reject it. Current research does not really support this idea. The most current research that I’m aware of (and here’s where I admit that I haven’t seen anything on this particular … Continue reading
