Debt and Marriage: How It is Tough to Love When You Owe

Many couples enter into a marriage with debt already in hand. Others accumulate debt together. Either way, nurturing a loving relationship can be hard when debt is hanging over your head. In fact, according to a study by Jeffrey Dew at Utah State University, couples who reported disagreeing about finance once a week were over 30 percent more likely to get divorced than couples who reported disagreeing about finances only a few times a month. Another inference can be made from this study: there is a whole lot of disagreement about money out there. Debt is a source of contention. … Continue reading

Your Feelings Influence Your Fights

In the last article I discussed how much of the fighting that takes place between two mates occurs due to control issues. In many cases, the situation that the couples are discussing or arguing over is only the lead to an issue over who can control who. In other cases, couples are not fighting over control but over feelings. Through communication, we constantly give signals of how we feel. Some of those signals are verbal and some are nonverbal. We communicate through our posture, facial expressions, eye contact, facial expressions, touch, and words. Through these signals we can give off … Continue reading

Marriage Types: Young

Like people, relationships and marriages are different. They vary in many aspects and areas. Some couples are more committed with covenant marriages while others are more open with polygamous marriages. Other people are in their second marriage. While some people marry later in life, some marry very early in life. I know some couples who married before they even graduated from high school. Like those couples who marry late in life, there are several reasons why a couple may choose to marry early or young. Some couples marry young due to the fact that they are expecting a baby. The … Continue reading

What Have I Done to My Marriage? – Part Three, Salvation Strategies

Yesterday I wrote what turned into Parts One and Two of the “What Have I Done to My Marriage” mini-series. Where I left off in the saga was how Wayne and I weren’t even on speaking terms this past weekend. In our years together we’ve had our moments of silent treatments, but they usually remain just that –moments. Saturday morning we went a few hours giving each other the silent treatment, and then again that night and into Sunday morning. That’s highly unusual. Fear and Doubt Sets In Sunday morning I woke up frantic, unable to push the following thoughts … Continue reading

Great Marriage Humorists

It’s been said that the best way to keep a marriage going is to keep your sense of humor, and some of the greatest humorists of our time also had some of the best marriages. Today especially it is important to save our marriages through he use of humor, as there is very little to find funny with the world at large outside our homes. Here we celebrate some of the greats, and learn a little bit about their lives and their marriages, may we all aspire to have the kind of marriages that they had: Erma Bombeck was the … Continue reading

Letting Go of Control

I’m doing this great online Bible study from a book called, “Let It Go.”  One of my favorite chapters was “Managing Your Man” and it was all about learning to let go, to stop trying to control your husband. This is a common issue in marriages but it can affect both sides.  The very things about your spouse that made you fall in love; quickly become the very things you try to change. Some people take the whole “the two shall become one” thing to mean control.  But this is detrimental to your marriage. I was pretty messed up when … Continue reading

When Is the Right Time to Get Married?

Over the past two days we’ve looked at young marriages and getting married later and seen each have advantages and disadvantages. So, is there a right time to get married? Some churches who believe in abstinence before marriage say it is better for a couple to get married young rather than later so they are not tempted into having sex before marriage. While I’m certainly not advocating sex before marriage, getting married for that reason alone is the worst reason I can think of. A marriage needs a lot more than sex going for it. Some people also marry because … Continue reading

Family Relationships and Attitude

Extended family is always going to be part of your married life. Even if you are no longer in contacted with your extended family, they will always be there in the form of influence over you and your spouse. These are the people that helped form your young lives, and their dynamics will definitely mold your beliefs. One of these beliefs is an attitude toward family and the roles that the in-laws take. When you became a daughter-in-law or son-in-law where you immediately part of the family and treated as a natural child? Or, are you family but more at … Continue reading

Unpopular Boys Names May Lead to Criminal Activity

Two researchers in my own home state of Pennsylvania have found that there is more to a baby name than you might think. The two researchers, David E. Kalist and Daniel Y. Lee conducted a study at Shippensburg University that took a look at common and uncommon boys names and found a link between uncommon names and breaking the law. First, they compiled a list of names of boys that they called juvenile delinquents as well as boys in the standard population. They then ranked these names based on popularity. So a name such as Michael, for example, would have … Continue reading
