Where Were His Parents?

By now I’m sure you’ve heard the devastating news out of Florida about the college student who committed suicide in front of a live web cam. His death by drug overdose was watched by thousands of Internet subscribers, and that’s not the most disturbing part of the horrific ordeal. According to news reports, the teenage boy was actually egged on by some computer users to end his life while he sat in his father’s home. By the time someone notified authorities of what was going on it was too late. By the way, that someone was not 19-year-old Abraham Biggs’ … Continue reading

Study Reports 77% of Kids 8-14 Help Parents With Online Tasks

Here’s an interesting new study I read about. It seems that 77% of kids between the ages of 8 and 14 are helping their parents with online tasks. You hear a lot about the rising number of adults who shop, make bill payments or complete other tasks online but it never occurred to me that kids, especially kids as young as 8, were also completing these same tasks. The study was conducted by Stars for Kidz and revealed that busy parents often turn to their kids when they need to make online purchases. A national survey of more than 6,000 … Continue reading

Internet Sex Crimes: Florida Gets Tough

If you have children, this is one of those stories that just makes you applaud. Earlier this week, the Florida State Legislature unanimously approved a new bill. This bill sets a maximum 15-year prison term for anyone who contacts a child online and attempts to meet that child for sexual purposes (this also applies in sting operations where volunteers and law enforcement pose as children online). This bill passes easily in the Senate, which makes sense. After all, who could really be in favor of child molesters and predators? Leaders of the Florida Sheriffs Association, perhaps motivated by the bill, … Continue reading

Thank Goodness For My Computer

I am thankful for my computer for many reasons: it allows to me to work at home, it helps me stay connected to family and friends, and in 2006 it helped preserve a piece of my sanity. For a few months this year we didn’t have cable, which meant my 2-year-old daughter was without her beloved “Wonder Pets,” “Wow! Wow! Wubbzy,” and her best friends, “The Backyardigans.” At first she was a bit shell shocked that her daily routine was being altered (she gets to watch 30 minutes of TV in the morning and 30 minutes at night). But, I … Continue reading

Activities for Kids

Keeping kids entertained can be challenging, but sometimes, great ideas only require the touch of a button. Your computer is a great resource for finding activities for children, from using basic software and surfing cool sites made just for kids to finding printables, crafts, and local activities and events. Using the Computer Helping kids learn the basics of using the computer gives them a great start. They will absolutely need to know how to use computers later in life, so making the experience fun is a great way to get them interested in learning more. Allowing children to use the … Continue reading
