Shameless Savings

I love to shop.  Unfortunately, I don’t have the money to support this passion.  Consequently, I’m often put in a situation that’s all too familiar to parents:  kicking pride to the curb. Admit it; you’ve done some pretty gross things since becoming a parent.  Goodness knows I have learned to exercise an immeasurable amount of humility since giving birth.  For example, I never thought I would willingly stretch out my hands to catch another person’s vomit.  Ditto for plucking poop out of the tub with my bare hands.  I also never imagined I’d allow my shirt to be used as … Continue reading

Why You Should Wash Your Kids’ New Clothes

My 5-year-old daughter is notorious for telling my mom not to get her new clothes as gifts. “Clothes don’t count, grandma,” she bluntly reminds my mom when asked what she wants for a special occasion. Well, apparently, our other relatives didn’t get the memo because my daughter received a boatload of new outfits for Christmas (along with a ton of other requested playthings). And when I say “boatload,” I’m not exaggerating. Seriously, my kid scored enough clothes to easily fill a regulation size double scull. Her pile of new apparel was so large it wouldn’t fit into her hamper or … Continue reading

Hello Kitty for Boys

My daughter loves Hello Kitty. Hello Kitty, Hello Kitty, Hello Kitty… the cute cuddly white bubble-headed feline decorates just about every square inch of her room and at times her body too. From toys to tees, jeans to jewelry, bedding to bags, watches to window clings, lipstick to laundry baskets, and everything in between, that cat has invaded our living space and it doesn’t so much as meow (thank goodness). With all that its creators—-Japan’s Sanrio Co.—-have done to commercialize Hello Kitty you’d think their latest move would have come a long time ago. According to company spokespeople, Sanrio plans … Continue reading

Why Celebrity Parents Are Going Gaga Over Munchkin

Most parents of babies and toddlers are familiar with the Munchkin brand. The company offers affordable products for the adorable droolers in your life; but what surprised me recently is the number of celebrity parents who have come out to endorse Munchkin products. Perhaps, I’m just jaded. After all, these are the same crop of celebs who don’t bat an eyelash at dropping $300 on a single pair of cotton PJs—for a newborn. Maybe, that’s why they are looking to spend less in other areas. Take for example, Munchkin’s new Jelly Bean slings and carriers. They were just unveiled at … Continue reading

Celebrity Baby Fashion

In a previous blog I told you about the tacky move made by NFL star quarterback Tom Brady’s current Brazilian model girlfriend. Gisele Bundchen sent Brady’s new son a $1000 gift basket featuring a onesie with the word “Supermodel” printed on the front. Catty–especially considering the current relationship between Bundchen, Brady, and Brady’s ex-girlfriend (and his baby’s mama) Bridget Moynahan. Anyway, back to the gift basket. The goodies were reportedly sent on the same day the famous football player mailed off his own gift basket to Moynahan filled with $2000 worth of baby items. So what exactly does one include … Continue reading

Allowing Kids to Select Their Wardrobe

When it comes to fashion, parents and their kids are often on different pages. In the current issue of the Family Education newsletter, parents were asked, “At what age should kids be allowed to pick their own wardrobe?” Here’s how parents voted: 10 or 11—53% 12 or 13—26% 14 or 15—9% 16 or older— 12% I believe in giving kids choices but only to a certain extent. For instance, I will ask Tyler if he wants cereal or oatmeal for breakfast. If I simply ask him what he wants without offering choices invariable he will say, “I don’t know.” On … Continue reading

Where Can I Buy Modest Clothing?

As pants get lower and shirts get higher I shudder to think what clothes will be like when my own daughters are teenagers. As a mother I want my girls to dress modestly. I like John Bytheway’s analogy. He said a person is their face not their body. So we shouldn’t dress to call attention away from our faces to our bodies. We want people to look at who we are and that is found in our face and reflected in our eyes. Dressing modestly ensures that people keep their focus on your face, on you. As my husband and … Continue reading
