Easy Edible Easter Crafts

There are hundreds of Easter crafts that feature popular holiday candies, such as jelly beans and chocolate, but most of the finished products can’t be eaten because they contain glue and a variety of other poisonous materials. That’s fine if you are making the Easter crafts alone and gifting them to older loved ones, but when you are crafting with kids, who don’t understand that a jelly bean dripping with rubber cement is not something that should be consumed, things can get a bit dicey. When I’m working with young children I pass on the paste-and-chocolate crafts and make these … Continue reading

Cheap Easter Chicks

Nothing says Easter like a basket filled with chocolate bunnies and marshmallow chicks. However, I’ve tried making homemade Peeps and I wouldn’t recommend taking on the challenge if you have little ones trying to “help out” in the kitchen. If you are looking for more kid-friendly Easter chick crafts that won’t break the bank, then stick to the following: BABY FOOTPRINT CHICKS Materials: Yellow paint Large container with flat base Large piece of construction paper Cornmeal Glue Directions: Pour yellow paint into large container big enough for kids to dip their feet into. Have your child select a piece of … Continue reading

Say Goodbye to Boring Easter Eggs

I grew up in an era when PAAS cornered the market on Easter egg dye. In fact, for a good 15 years or so, I didn’t even know you could color eggs without PAAS. These days Easter egg decorating options are seemingly unlimited… and you don’t have to have Martha Stewart’s crafting abilities to complete them. The following Easter egg-decorating ideas are simple enough for kids to complete with little adult supervision. The end results will impress even the Easter Bunny, and will have you wondering why you stuck with boring colored eggs for so long. STRING EGGS Materials: Small … Continue reading

Make Funny Bunnies for Easter

Forget about the return of chirping birds, spring flowers, warmer temperatures and veiled crucifixes, I just saw a telltale sign that Easter is on its way: a commercial for Max and Ruby’s Breakfast with the Bunnies Week on Nick Jr. Because, you know, Easter just wouldn’t be Easter without a week’s worth of funny bunny episodes. If you can’t countdown to Easter without bunnies, but you don’t have cable, or you are looking for something a little more productive for your kids to do over spring break, then consider making the following simple crafts. Your children will love seeing how … Continue reading

St. Patrick’s Day Fun for the Entire Family

Moms, dads, grandmas, grandpas, kids, and second cousins once removed, can all get in on St. Patrick’s Day fun with the following simple ideas. The first is an easy craft project that will ensure that no one in the family will get pinched for not wearing green. Meanwhile, the second suggestion is a great way to encourage reluctant participants to get into the holiday spirit. After all, no one can resist chocolate, so why not gather the clan to whip up some tasty St. Patrick’s Day Peppermint Pattie Pudding? GREEN AND GOLD ST. PATRICK’S DAY PIN Materials (for one pin): … Continue reading

St. Patrick’s Day Fun for Kids

Today my kindergartner blasted out of her classroom and raced down the school hallway with what looked like a rainbow colored contrail floating behind her. As she jumped into my arms I realized that the blaze of color was in fact a handful of paper streamers. “Nice tail,” I quipped. “It’s not a tail,” my daughter responded repositioning the streamers so I could see them better. “It’s a St. Patrick’s Day rainbow and I’m the pot of gold at the end of it.” Of course! What was I thinking? A paper plate with a bunch of streamers attached to it … Continue reading

Keeping Kids Busy During Winter Break

You know winter break may be wearing out its welcome when you send your kid outside to play with his Crayola Sidewalk Paint Sprayer in the snow and subzero windchill. My neighbor’s 8-year-old spent a good chunk of this afternoon decorating snow banks with a toy typically reserved for warm weather fun. The sight prompted me to phone his mother and share a chuckle. I called, but she wasn’t laughing. Apparently, my neighbor sent her son outside (with multiple layers of snow gear on) to regain her sanity. The kid, who’s in week two of his Christmas break from school, … Continue reading

Dinosaur Fun

My daughter wants to celebrate her 6th birthday with a huge dinosaur-theme party. The only problem is that she won’t be turning six until late next spring. That’s an eternity for a kindergartner. In an effort to make the wait a bit more tolerable, I’ve been collecting dinosaur-theme crafts for her to make on the weekends. Some of them will be used as party decorations while others are being used as tests to see if they are appropriate projects to make with a dozen or so 5 year olds. Here’s what we’ve been working on: PAPER PLATE DINO Materials: Paper … Continue reading
