Is Giving Meal Choices a Good Idea?

Plenty of parents I know make up separate meals for the kids and the adults or older children in the family. One mom and dad actually make an average of three different dinners each night, just to make sure that everyone in the family eats. Now I understand that certain childhood disabilities, from diabetes to autism, may require special diets, and in those cases parents have to do what they have to do. That isn’t what I am talking about.  More so, I am referring to families with healthy, average children who have fallen into the pattern of becoming short … Continue reading

Eating Out: More Trick Than Treat

Eating out is a big treat for most families.  Parents love the break from cooking and doing the dishes, while kids enjoy eating chicken nuggets in a different setting.  Unfortunately, splurging on a restaurant meal may come back to bite you. According to a new study by the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), parents are doing their children a disservice by treating them to dinner out.  Researchers say menu options offered to children by most U.S. restaurant chains have way too many calories, in addition to dangerously high amounts of salt and fat.  In fact, the group … Continue reading

Just Crummy

In my household, I have declared a war on crumbs. Everywhere I look, crumbs seem to find their way onto the floor, the couch, the kitchen counter. No matter that the kids are not allowed to eat anywhere in the home other than the dining room table, crumbs continue to find a place. I think that there are crumbs all over America that just wait for my kids to walk by. They attach themselves like ticks, waiting to hitch a ride until they can find their next meal. This must explain the fact that after a snack of Jell-O in … Continue reading

Do Burgers Cause Asthma?

Which came first, the burger or the wheezing? That is a question some doctors are examining after the results of an international study that shows that children who eat three or more burgers a week may be at a higher risk of asthma. As a parent of a child who has asthma, this study sparked my attention. We all know that there is a link between diet and health, of course, but is this a case where there is something in a burger itself that can contribute to respiratory disease, or is it a matter of circumstance and lifestyle. Homemade Chicken Nuggets

There are so many different chicken nugget recipes out there. Some of them require frying others are baked. Since chicken nuggets are one of the few actual meat products that my children will eat I have tried many different recipes. My children actually prefer frozen processed chicken nuggets (my husband thinks they are crazy) but they will also eat these two recipes. One is for fried chicken nuggets the other for baked. Fried Chicken Nuggets Fill a pan, electric fry pan, or iron skillet, with oil, leaving about 1-inch of pan at the top. Heat the oil to 350 degrees … Continue reading
