Disasters and Marriage

Disasters affect relationships in one of two ways. They can bring a couple closer together as they cling to each other for support and comfort and love. Or they can produce so much anger that people turn against each other and take out their frustrations on those closest to them. This is eyes exactly what is happening in Christchurch. Reports show ‘domestic violence has surged by 50 percent after a major tremor rocked New Zealand’s second city last September.’ That tremor was ‘the prelude to Tuesday’s quake that left at least 123 dead and destroyed parts of the city centre.’ … Continue reading

Living Together Before Marriage

Living together before marriage is very common in today’s society. It almost seems to be the expected thing these days. I’ve heard people say its better to try it first and see whether you’re suited. But living together is not as good a test as some people might like to think. In fact statistics show those who live together before marriage are more likely to divorce than those who don’t. I’ve had friends who have lived together before marriage and translated that to a successful marriage. I also know those who have lived together and then, as soon as marriage … Continue reading

Please Be Kind

Dear Future Pregnant Self, Congratulations, you are expecting baby number (2? 3? 10?)! Do you remember the first time you were pregnant? Your poor husband cringed every time you opened your mouth. Go ahead; ask him if he remembers that first pregnancy. “You were mean,” he’ll say. It’s time to face the truth. You were not a very nice pregnant woman. Even though you blamed your sharp tongue and bossy behavior on your raging pregnancy hormones, there is no excuse. You even made your sister cry when labor set in. That’s just wrong. This time you need to do a … Continue reading

What’s Most Important?

We determine how important things and people are in our life by the amount of time and effort we devote to them. Take time to list now those things/ relationships important to you as they come to mind. Maybe even the order in which they come to mind might tell you something. When you have your list, prioritize them from one to however many according to what is most important. Next put down next to each one the amount of time you devote each day/ week to each of the things on your list. Sure, we all have to work … Continue reading

Give Your Child Hope

We live in a fast-paced world and we have access to so much information about what is going on all over the world. Our children see images of war, genocide, global warming and hear dire messages on a daily basis. They cannot help but be a generation who is skeptical and wary to say the very least. As parents, it is up to us to combat all of those negative messages and to try to give our children some hope that they can carry with them into the future. I truly do believe that our children need some strong doses … Continue reading

Who Is at Risk for Calcium Deficiency?

Certain types of people may be at higher risk of calcium deficiency than others. They may need extra calcium in their diets (or in supplement form) in order to prevent a deficiency. Postmenopausal women may be at higher risk for calcium deficiency. During menopause, many women experience increased bone loss — most rapidly during the first five years. Why is this? As the body produces less estrogen, the body absorbs less calcium and creates less new bone. Combination hormone therapy (estrogen and progestin) can help prevent osteoporosis and fractures, but comes with a whole bunch of potential side effects. Estrogen … Continue reading

Share a Smile

We tend to focus on the “business” of our home businesses—spreadsheets and budgets and marketing plans. Even our human relationships can be relegated down to “networking.” In reality, sometimes what is needed in the course of our business day is for us to simply step outside ourselves and share a smile with someone… I know it sounds simplistic and somewhat Polly-Anna, but smiles really do work. They work for the person on the receiving end and you might be surprised to remind yourself how good it feels to give a smile. Forget the image of the stern and stressed business … Continue reading

Get Out of Bed and Get to Work

We often talk about motivation here in the Home Business blog—ways to get energized and stay focused on building our home businesses. Some days, however, we may not feel particularly energized and staying motivated may be a huge challenge. There are those days when what we really need to do is just get ourselves dressed and show up—whether our heart and energy are in it or not. I really do believe that things cannot always be a joy and a romp. I also believe that sometimes, the secret to success and well-being is to simple get up, get out there, … Continue reading

Watch Out for the Downward Spiral

We all have bad days now and again in our home businesses. Most of the time, it is just a bump in the road and we have bounced back by the next day (if not later that same day of within the week.) Sometimes, however, elements and problems can combine and we can let our emotions and self-esteem get in the mix and we end up on a downward spiral that sends our business operations into a tailspin. I cannot help but believe that emotions, attitude and reaction play a big part in our business resiliency. If we let ourselves … Continue reading

Try Not to Overreact at Mistakes and Stumbles

As much as I would sometimes like them to, things do not go perfectly around here. My kids will do really well in some areas and then stumble in others; I will set expectations that are rather unreasonable, and then be disappointed when we fumble. As a single parent, it is a constant battle and lesson for me to remind myself that lessons are learned through mistakes and I need to temper my reactions. For me, I can get wound so tight that I over-react when my kids (or myself) make mistakes and things don’t go as planned. The only … Continue reading
