Can You Facilitate Instead of Lecture?

I have written before about my challenges as a parent of trying NOT to lecture too much. It just seems to come naturally—we parents have so much we want to say and we expect that our children should want to hear it. The lecture, however, is a big turn-off! It is a surefire way to make sure that our children totally tune out what we are trying to say. Are You Giving a Lecture or Having a Discussion?

When I was growing up, getting a lecture from my mom was the most painful type of punishment imaginable. The thing is, I’m sure that when she was “lecturing” she did not think of it as punishment but more as communicating and really getting down to the meat of things. That’s not what I heard of course and I would have much rather be banished to my room for hours than have to endure the lecture.
