Seafood Dishes for Your New Year’s Party

I grew up in Hawaii where no one rings in the New Year without indulging in fresh seafood. Whether it’s sashimi, oysters, crab or shrimp, locals make sure there is some type of seafood in their systems by the time midnight arrives. Now that I live 5,000 miles away from my island home I have to make do with my current resources. It’s not as easy getting your hands on sashimi in Wisconsin, which is why I have learned to feature a few other seafood dishes on my New Year’s menu. Case in point: Seafood Newburg. This decadent dish is … Continue reading

Christmas Dinner: Surf and Turf

Not everyone is headed over the river and through the woods to spend Christmas with grandma, grandpa and 25 other relatives. Lobster with Cilantro Lime Butter

There’s nothing like ringing in the New Year with a decadent meal… at least in my family. In a previous blog I shared our family’s tradition of dining on a luxurious meal that includes a combination of a choice cut of beef and a seafood selection. When you think of extravagant feasts involving seafood most people think of lobster. It makes sense. If you’ve been to the grocery store in the last week you probably noticed the large lobster displays. Unfortunately, the displays at my local grocer didn’t advertise a sale on the popular crustacean, but if you are going … Continue reading

The Pope’s Former Wheels—Deal or No Deal?

Going, going… STAYING! So much for driving to Sunday mass in the Pope’s former car. Apparently, no one was willing to fork over enough money to pay for a 1999 metallic gray Volkswagen Golf believed to once belong to Pope Benedict XVI. The hatchback was up on eBay, but the auction ended Saturday without a winner. According to news reports, this is the second time in two years the car has been up for bid with no takers. This time the bids surpassed $204,000, but that still didn’t meet the reserve price. (A spokeswoman for eBay, told reporters it was … Continue reading

Thanksgiving Turkeys Hope To Be As Lucky

This is the tale of a gigantic lobster whose story I feel may provide hope to all those turkeys hoping to avoid the “honor” of becoming the centerpiece of a Thanksgiving dinner table. Monstro is a 15-pound lobster caught 100 miles off the Massachusetts coast. He spent last month in the lobster tank at Angelica’s Restaurant in Bethlehem, where he made headlines for his massive size. According to experts, 15-pound lobsters are rare anywhere, but especially in the North Country. Monstro made his way to Angelica’s after the restaurant’s owner bought all 37-inches of him (his claws are 15-inches long) … Continue reading
