Chocolate Festival Sabotage

I just learned that there will be the 1st annual Chocolate Festival nearby in a couple of weeks. They are featuring an “All You Can Eat” Chocolate Buffet. Hmm, do I dare go? I have to go because I have never been to one and I have to see what it is all about. There are going to be demonstrations, activities, and raffles as well. This should be interesting. Actually, chocolate has a lot of good in it, but for a dieter eating chocolate can make you lose your “mind over matter” motto. Every once in a while, especially if … Continue reading

Homeschool Glossary (words homeschoolers should know) – B

Back to basics: A back to basics approach suggest teaching children in lower grades reading, writing, and arithmetic and factual knowledge only. It suggests leaving out lessons that mold and socialize children like sex Ed, tolerance, and other feel good topics found in schools. Benchmarks: Benchmarks are set by the state and governmental education departments and dictate standards for children’s’ knowledge base for each grade or age level. These standards are also set for the beginning middle and end of the school year. Benefits: Regardless of the reason, if you choose to homeschool you will be sure to discover numerous … Continue reading

Five Weird Pregnancy Symptoms

There are a number of weird, though perfectly normal, side effects to pregnancy that no one tells you about.  You might get all or none of these, and it could vary from one of your pregnancies to another. 1. Bloody Gums.  Early in the second trimester I began noticing a bit more blood than normal when I flossed.  I went to my routine dentist appointment, and the hygienist confirmed that yup, that’s just something that can happen when you’re pregnant.  Chalk this one down to hormones; they’re making your gums (and other parts) more inflamed than usual.  Pregnant women are … Continue reading

Beware the Green Eyed Monster: How Jealousy Can Impact Your Blended Family

I tiptoed up to the topic, believing that most of us are pretty sensitive about it: “Sometimes step parents feel…I don’t want to call it jealousy, but…” at which point Kelly, eight years into her step mom experience, interrupted, “Oh, you can call it jealous! I was definitely jealous!—of a six year old, no less!” We were talking about what can often become a defining dynamic between children and step parents, and consequently, a divisive issue for a biological parent and their spouse. It’s not an emotion many of us are willing to cop to, especially if the trigger is … Continue reading

What Marriage Is Like

It’s interesting the way things interconnect. The other day I was reading a novel by Lynne Griffin called Life without Summer. You’ll get some interesting insights about marriage and the way grief affects marriage in this novel. Since the author has been involved in family and social work, I’d suggest it is based on a certain amount of experience and knowledge of the subject. After I’d written a review about it, I went into the author’s website and from there into her Family Life Stories blog where she makes an interesting observation about marriage. ‘To come front and center with … Continue reading

My Lifestyle Journey (Week Seven)

My life has been a whirlwind for the past month. Although I have not experienced any additional weight loss, I have managed to maintain, which makes me very happy. I have also been more faithful about exercising routinely. I visited my doctor a couple of weeks ago. I asked her what is the best way to lose weight at this stage of my life (40+). She said that if she knew she would be skinny. I told her that I have been dieting and exercising and that my weight is still not budging. I do, however, feel stronger, more muscular, … Continue reading

Does It Matter What You Believe?

In Philippians 3 we saw our confidence needs to be in Jesus. This flies in the face of much popular thought today, which tells us ‘it doesn’t matter what you believe so long as you believe in something’ and that ‘all roads ultimately lead to God.’ This is not what the Bible, teaches. And the Bible is our authority because it is not the words of men but it is God speaking to us. People can be sincere in their beliefs, but be sincerely wrong. Paul found that out. He was a sincere. He was not only a Jew trusting … Continue reading

A Day in the Life of a Nurse: Surrounded By Angels

From The Heart As I gazed upon the group of girls that I work with running through my mind were many thoughts. I watched each one of them interact with the residents and notice the care that they give and the way that their hands moved toward them with gentleness. I see which girls made extra special efforts in the care of the residents that they were given charge of for the day and make a mental note to tell that person later on about what a good job they did. I listen to how they speak to the resident … Continue reading

Dieting and PMS: A Fight to the Finish, Part I

The Curse Dieting is hard enough, but many of us manage to accomplish our goal eventually. Everything is going fairly well, we are being faithful and strong-willed resisting the tempting goodies that surround us for the most part. We are losing a pound here, a pound there…and then we feel it….that first twinge…that first cramp. Oh no, you think, not now. I was doing so well. You know what will happen next. You feel it start to overtake you. You do not feel as strong as you initially did. You get an uncontrollable urge that you just have to satisfy. … Continue reading
