Fido Finder and Tabby Tracker

I’ve been writing a lot of articles lately that relate to what it’s like to be a pet lover in the internet age. The internet has changed how shelters can communicate and how potential pet owners might find their future animals. Today I will examine how we can use the Internet as a tool to locate missing pets. People probably began posting messages about lost pets online almost as soon as the internet was introduced. Now that sites like Craig’s List and similar local-based online classifieds have put the concept on the computer, we can find pets, supplies for them, … Continue reading

Rat Terrier Saves Mini-Schnauzer

I’m going to be honest here: I’m not a huge fan of tiny dog breeds. The smallest I like are beagles. I just have had mostly bad experiences with the high energy and constant yipping that tend to hallmark many miniature breeds. Yet I believe that the true nature of a dog comes with its personality, so I try not to let myself judge an individual dog until I learn more about it. Recent news from CNN has only strengthened that opinion. Rowdy, a dog from Rancho Cordova, California, recently made headlines for saving his neighbor. Despite some similarities the … Continue reading

Dead Dog Walking

Today I failed as an animal lover and as an advocate of rescuing animals. I let a stray continue being a stray. I did stop my car so the dog could cross the busy street. I was thankful I had caught it out of the corner of my eye in time so I could stop. I was thankful that the person in the car behind me had enough time to slam on their brakes and not hit me. I marveled that the dog had made it across Nolensville Road at all. It’s a six lane road with a turning lane … Continue reading

Tabby: The Continuing Saga

I continue to be a foster mom to the little stray cat we’ve named Tabby. Life with Tabby continues to be interesting: Friday, February 16 At 2 p.m. she had her check up appointment at Banfield Pet Hospital. The Friday before she was so out of it that putting her in the carrier I bought at PetSmart to transport her home was no trouble. And she simply slept during the car ride, so there was no muss or fuss. She fussed considerably about me putting her in her cardboard carrier this go around. She did the whole splayed leg routine … Continue reading

I’m a Foster (Cat) Mom!

It was an ordinary Friday last afternoon as I headed out to run errands. I stopped at the recycling place first before heading on to PetSmart to get Valentine’s Day gifts for Murph’s buddies, Sophie and Lady. But on my way there I saw something in the road. The SUV in front of me swerved to miss it, and ran over it–that’s when the little cat looked up and over her shoulder as if to say, “What the heck’s going on?” (The wheels missed her, just the undercarriage went over her.) And that’s when I realized, “Oh my God! She’s … Continue reading

You’re Not in Kansas Anymore, Toto: 5 Steps to Help a Stray Pet Find Home

Photo by Bethan Hazell Extraordinary things happen on the most ordinary days at the most unexpected times. That’s always the case for me, at least. I never wake up thinking, “Yep, this’ll be the day I rescue a stray.” I can just be sitting at home, minding my own business, and suddenly have a stray run by, or come up to the door (it honestly happens), and next thing you know I’m making a new friend and trying to figure out where he or she came from and how to help them get back. One little neighborhood escape artist, Luke, … Continue reading

Lassie, Come Home!

You have probably heard stories about pets who were lost, or dropped off, or left behind miles from home. But can dogs and cats really find their way home over seemingly impossible distances? The skeptical answer: These amazing tales may not be quite so amazing. A pet may happen to find a ride in the right direction, or may simply pick the right direction by accident! The modest answer: If the distance is reasonable and the pet is in a familiar area, the chances of him finding his way home is pretty good. Dogs and cats can roam pretty far … Continue reading
