Gambling and Marriage

I read something the other day which astounded me. Acceding to reports Australians spend $60 a week on lottery and lotto tickets. I wonder if it is any different in USA. Now, I don’t know about you but I can’t imagine taking that sort of amount out of our budget every week and still trying to get by. Yes, I know the logic is someone has to win it. That’s the sort of thinking that gets people sucked into buying tickets they can’t afford and putting money through slot machines in the hope of pulling of the jackpot. I’ve been … Continue reading

Let’s Talk About Luck

People generally fall into two camps, those who believe in “luck” or chance and those who do not. I am one of those people who do believe that there is such a thing as luck and that we really don’t have much control over it. While I am not someone who believes that everything is random and everything is chance, I do think there are things that are simply out of our control and when it comes to our home businesses—there is only going to be a certain amount that we can influence and some things that we cannot. We … Continue reading

Lucky Ones

Sometimes people will mention how lucky my kids are to be adopted. In one sense I suppose that’s true. They have a loving family and a good education. It is not as likely they would have received these with their birth families. But I’m always uncomfortable when people say this. First of all, sometimes they say this in front of the children. Imagine how this sounds to them. Now, if someone comments that my husband and I are lucky to have found each other, that’s one thing. But imagine, for example, that someone who knows your husband but has only … Continue reading

Lucky Bamboo for a Home Business

Despite my often pragmatic approach to life and business, I am not without my superstitions. I am willing to try most things and give every philosophy and theory a bit of a spin. I do put some stock in “energy flow” and Feng Shui, so when a friend recently gave me a “lucky” bamboo plant for wealth and prosperity, I was quite happy to add it to my collection of home business “tools”… Okay, I am not saying that I am going to take my bamboo plant to the bank with me, and if I am being completely honest I … Continue reading

Timing Can Be Important

I do not know if I subscribe to the saying that “timing is everything”–maybe when it comes to personal relationships, but I don’t know if it ALWAYS the case when it comes to business concerns. I do, however, think that timing can be very important in operating a home-based business. I am not really talking about time management here (although we do chat about that often enough here in the Home Business blog and it is a key part of doing well in a home-based business), but more the realities of a market at any given time, the economy, the … Continue reading

Why Don’t These Things Ever Happen To Me?

First, it’s the guy selling his hair on eBay for a ton of cash; then the group of cheese factory workers (who are practically our neighbors) that walk away with the record breaking Powerball jackpot; now I hear that a guy who drives on the same stretch of highway I do literary runs into hundreds of dollars. Why don’t these things ever happen to me? How can it be? Or better yet, where was I when money was flying around in the middle of a Wisconsin highway? That’s what I asked when I heard that Ted Neitzke was driving to … Continue reading
