Pop Culture Roundup – September 2, 2010

Her ex-girlfriend Lindsay Lohan may be out of jail and rehab, but Samantha Ronson is not having a great week. It appears that her bulldog Cadillac has killed a neighbor’s dog. A 911 call was made yesterday that a pit bull was attacking a small dog and its owner. Witnesses have said the dog was actually a bulldog, not a pit bull. The dog involved in the attack was reportedly a three pound Maltese named Tiger. Tiger was dead by the time police got to the scene. Its owner, an unidentified female, had minor injuries. Sources say Ronson was asleep … Continue reading

Not So Smart After All?

Human beings are supposed to be intelligent and smarter than the animal and bird kingdom right? But maybe we’re not so smart after all. Sometimes we could take note and learn from them. For example we have a dog, part Shih Tzu part Maltese Terrier. Whenever Mick and I come home, no matter whether we have been gone five minutes or hours, she is so pleased to see us she lets us know by greeting us enthusiastically and affectionately. Do we show the same enthusiasm when our spouse comes home? Mick and I always kiss and hug before one of … Continue reading

The Law of Attraction, Cozies and Cats: An Interview with Author Jennie Bentley

Recently I’ve been thinking a lot about how I wish I knew any authors who featured cats in their work so I could interview them for the Pets Blog. Well, in yet another display of the Law of Attraction at work, wouldn’t you know my wish was granted this past Sunday when I was on a panel at the Southern Festival of books with Bente Gallagher who writes as Jennie Bentley? Her first mystery in her DIY Home Renovation Mystery series is called Fatal Fixer Upper and it’s due out November 4th. In the process of talking about her book … Continue reading

Greatest American Dog: The Final Episode

Somehow, despite my problem, I made it through the entire series of the Greatest American Dog. (Except for the couple of episodes I missed while on vacation, as I mentioned in my last Greatest American Dog commentary.) A Dog is An Extension of The Owner When they were trying to narrow it down from the final three to the final two, the judges were evaluating the owner as much as the dog. They were pretty critical of how the owners were with their dogs. As Laurie put it, it came down to a battle of the training methods. (Which again … Continue reading

Fashion Forward: Doggie Sunglasses and Other Must-Have Items for the Beach

Fashionable pet owners who want to have their dogs look as cool at the pool as they do might want to include a pair of Doggles in their beach bags this summer. The name is almost as cute (and effective) as the product. Doggles are protective goggles for dogs of all shapes and sizes. They have been around since 1997 and sell for about $30. The idea for the protective and stylish sunglasses for dogs came from a pet owner whose own pooch kept missing the Frisbee during games of catch on bright sunny days. What started off as a … Continue reading

European Island Adventures

Whereas it might not appear in my writings as though I have an appreciation for any other island than the one I grew up on I really do have a great affinity for all floating oasises the world over. I mean, really, who doesn’t dream of taking an island vacation, especially to a place that doesn’t include a slew of other vacationers trying to get in some serious R&R? If you are looking to escape to an island with deserted beaches, fascinating culture, and historical sights, then consider visiting the following summer hot spots: GOZO The island of Gozo in … Continue reading

Today’s Report on Dog-Napping

This morning while I ate breakfast and watched Today with my mom, they covered a story about the rise in dog-nappings. And they weren’t talking about dogs taking more naps, but dogs being kidnapped. Not for the Reasons I Expected Because they were showing purebred dogs I figured that dog snatchers were focusing on taking dogs that they hoped to get a ransom for. Not so. (Although some do take the dog, wait for a reward to be offered, and then say they’ve found it to claim the reward.) But they also had other reasons for nabbing dogs, such as: … Continue reading

Gearing Up for Puppy Bowl IV

That’s right. It’s that time of year again. Time for what’s become a pre-Super Bowl tail-gating tradition in our house: watching Animal Planet’s Puppy Bowl. And it’s the team of frisky pups getting their game on that truly puts the “tail” in tail-gating! This year’s “Starting Line-up” Which of the 33 puppies will be able to hang in there for the duration of the game? Who’s got the moves to go the distance? There’s no telling until the hounds are let loose on the field, but here’s this year’s contenders: Abigail (Jack Russell Terrier) Jack (Mini Dachshund) Attucker (Beagle) Jackson … Continue reading

Celebrities and Sleeping Pills – Part One

While we will not know exactly what killed Heath Ledger for another 10 days or so, we do know that the police have reported that sleeping pills were found in the room. Maybe not “scattered around” as originally reported, but he did have prescription sleeping pills in his room with his name on the bottle. What is certain is that if he did take an overdose of sleeping pills, he certainly would not be the first celebrity to do so. Here is a list of celebs who tried to take their life with sleeping pills: Actress Mary Astor starred along … Continue reading

New Arrivals

A new arrival has come to live at our house – a bundle of cuteness wrapped up in fur. And interesting the way it came about. For months I have wanted another dog but with the move and lots of things happening that required frequent visits to Sydney it was impractical. Then today, I decided to take the local newspaper with me in the car, which I never normally do. I saw an ad in the paper from someone selling Maltese Terrier cross Shih Tzu puppies. Every other time, I’ve mentioned the prospect of another dog my husband has been … Continue reading
