Pro Football Hall of Fame Contest

I’ve actually been to a Superbowl. Yep. In 1983, I watched John Riggins make that infamous 43-yard run into the end zone, and kill any hope the Miami Dolphins had of beating the Washington Redskins. It was very exciting, mostly because of the energy coming from the crowd. Because it was at the Rose Bowl, there were a lot of Hollyweird celebrities in attendance. I remember that Linda Carter (Wonder Woman) was even more beautiful in person, gracious, and quite a big football fan. At the time, I wasn’t. I was actually working a concessions stand, but took breaks to … Continue reading

Tips for Cooking Contest Enthusiasts

You might have read my earlier blog, stating that the Pillsbury Bake-Off is open for entries again. This contest is appealing to many home-cooks for a variety of reasons. First, the contest utilizes store-bought ingredients such as refrigerated biscuit dough, pie crust, and tortillas as staple ingredients. Second, the grand prize is $1 Million. You can’t beat that. If you’re a cooking contest enthusiast, or if you’ve always wanted to enter but didn’t know where to start, here are a few tips to get you into the kitchen. Keep it Simple—This seems logical enough, right? But, wait! What if your … Continue reading

Contests and January Sweepstakes

In what seems like another lifetime ago, I used to be the feature writer for a local monthly magazine. It was great experience because I got to see all the behind-the-scenes happenings that you don’t find in a book. One of the most surprising things to me was the monthly contests. The magazine had a readership of 40,000 people. Different advertisers would donate prizes for the month. They weren’t Ed McMahon quality prizes, but they were decent. Things like a day spa, massages for two, nights in a hotel, or admission to local attractions. One month was a birthday party … Continue reading

Winning a Million Dollars–Could This be Your Next Job?

I have come up with a new idea: I am going to enter sweepstakes as a job! Okay, maybe not as a full-time job, but I found a neat site that makes finding sweepstakes a lot easier to do: Online Sweepstakes. They not only list all sweepstakes currently open, but they also break them up into categories like what the prize is, how often you can enter, when the contest expires, and other helpful groupings. For someone who doesn’t have the slightest clue about sweepstakes (like me!), this site really seems jam-packed full of great info. And just in case … Continue reading

Want to Win $1 Million? The 43rd Pillsbury Baking Contest is Open For Entries!

Yep, you read it right! Pillsbury is holding their bi-annual cooking competition and the grand prize is $1 million! If you’re not familiar with The Pillsbury Bake-Off—the contest originated in 1949, giving home cooks the opportunity to win cash and prizes for their recipes. For each contest, there are specific categories you can enter. The categories change from year to year. There is also a set list of ingredients you may choose from when preparing your recipes. You don’t have to use all of the ingredients, but you do have to use two. And this year, Pillsbury has changed things … Continue reading

Home and Garden Television’s (HGTV) Dream Home Contest

It’s back! Every year HGTV throws a contest where one lucky winner walks away with a house. Not just a house, mind you, but a dream house. They’re built just for the contest, elegantly decorated, and situated in beautiful communities with gorgeous views. Truly a dream come true. Although we already have a home that we (mostly) love, we continue to enter. We’ve been entering for four years now and haven’t won yet, so this must be our year! The 2007 home is in Winter Park, Colorado, a skier’s paradise. It’s one that I could actually see my parents living … Continue reading

Staples Hometown Views Contest

I consider myself a decent photographer. Not as good as my 14 year old (who got his first magazine credit at 8!), but passable. Every year, we enter our local county fair’s photography division. They judge strictly, because amateurs and professionals are in the same category. I won four years back in the photo essay division, shooting pictures of our A&W’s classic car show. Two years ago, my now 12 year old took Best of Show for Youth for a photo of a covered wagon. He’s a little varmint, one of those that has the golden touch. Last year, my … Continue reading
