From scary weather to Valentines fun, this has been a busy week here in the Home blog. Did you have a good one? How did you spend your time in your home? Here we have been busy prepping and priming up the family room. I’ll be writing more about that. But for now, why not check out the articles we shared this past week. Scary Weather

The wind has been howling so badly this week and into the weekend. Our neighbors and ourselves have lost large tree limbs and some trees, too. One large tree cracked in two and fell on our property from the neighbor’s side. We heard the large cracking and watched it out of window yesterday. Other limbs, too stressed from the high winds pummeled the roof of our home, causing us to jump every so often, as we went about our day. Every time I went outside to put out the garbage or get the mail, I felt as though the sky … Continue reading

Murphy, Tornadoes, and One Ruff Night

Just shy of a month ago violent weather hit one afternoon and caused Murphy, Mr. Meow, Tabby, and I to huddle together in the laundry room due to potentially tornadic activity heading our way. If you’ve caught any of the news today, you’re well aware Tennessee was one of the states ravaged by bad weather once again last night. It was a dark and stormy night… There were tornadoes in the Nashville area around 10 p.m., but not near where we live. Thankfully we weren’t forced to seek refuge in the laundry room again. (But I did have everything set … Continue reading

Is Mother Nature Really To Blame For Airline Weather Delays?

Weather history was made this evening in Wisconsin. A rare series of January tornadoes ripped through a county just south of where I live, demolishing buildings and houses, downing power lines and leaving more than a dozen people injured. The ferocious storm also caused delays at area airports including Milwaukee and Chicago’s O’Hare. Totally reasonable. However, there have been many times when I wondered if airlines were telling the truth about weather delays. For example, a couple of weeks ago United Airlines cancelled 1,200 flights and blamed various winter storms for doing so. But then, a couple of days later … Continue reading

Days and Days and Days of Rain

I live in the Pacific Northwest–the climate where I live is relatively mild and since I am down in the valley, so to speak, we don’t really get the snows and ice of more harsh winters. What we do get, however, is rain–we have been enduring days and days and days of rain, almost nonstop. Even for those of us who are used to it, all this rain can take its toll on a family… My son was pacing around the house this morning, ruminating on whether or not he wanted to get his rain gear on to go to … Continue reading

Protecting Yourself During a Legal Separation

My last article focused on the aspects of a legal separation. Many couples think that they can just move apart and be legally separated. However without the proper papers filed, you are not protected. A legal separation is a must if you feel that the divorce or separation may get ugly or difficult. It can help give the two of you guidelines to live by so neither partner is taken advantage of during the separation. In the article, I also began noting some precautions that one should take when undergoing a legal separation. This article will offer more advice on … Continue reading

Mother Nature vs. Baby New Year

My friend just called to wish me a Happy New Year… from Chicago’s O’Hare Airport. No kidding. The poor thing is sitting in an airport on New Year’s Eve on her way back from spending Christmas with her brother in Colorado. She’s been waiting 3 hours for her now twice delayed connecting flight back to Wisconsin. If she’s lucky she’ll land here by next year. Mother Nature has not been kind to holiday travelers this year. Bad weather has made the busy travel season difficult for flyers from coast to coast. Making matters worse is a new report from the … Continue reading

Did you have a White Christmas?

We didn’t have a white Christmas but it was a merry one. Quiet, but nice. I hope yours was wonderful. Did you have snow? We didn’t have so much as a flake, but we were okay with that. In fact, it was sunny and must have been about 50 degrees on Christmas. My husband and I sat outside on our deck for a while and he cooked our Christmas ham on the grill. Imagine my surprise yesterday, when the early morning sunshine turned to heavy clouds and cold winds around noon. Imagine my greater surprise when huge white chunks of … Continue reading

Winter Weather Terms (3)

Do you know what to expect when you hear all of those winter weather terms? Understanding what it all means can keep you and your family safe from harm when severe weather hits your area. We are up to part three of the winter weather terms. This is the final five weather terms that you should know. Sleet Sleet is frozen or partially frozen rain that comes down to the Earth in the form of small ice pellets. The ice pellets hit the ground so fast that they actually bounce instead of stick. However, sleet can accumulate on the ground, … Continue reading

Winter Weather Terms (2)

Today is Sunday, and we are awaiting our first snow storm of the season. The kids are excited and hoping to get enough snow for a snowman. Looking at the weather map, it is clear that this storm covers almost three-quarters of the country, although by the time it get to us, there might not be much snow. Do you know your winter weather terms? All of those warnings and watches that are released by the National Weather Service have different meanings and different levels of severity that are good to understand.
