One of the Best Things About a Home-Based Business—NOT Having to Battle the Weather

Like most of the country, we have been having our share of wintry weather here in the Pacific Northwest. While it may not be the snow and ice that has blanketing parts of the country, it is still rather unsavory and fun to go out and about in it. These are times when I feel quite glad to be working from home—no commuting or having to dress to battle the elements! In fact, I can stand on my covered porch in my stocking feet or wearing slippers and watch as the storms blow, or I can look up from my … Continue reading

Burrowing In for Winter

With only one of my three children at home this past weekend, it was mighty quiet. The two of us had a hard time staying productive and motivated. Even though we both had plenty of work, homework, and errands to do—we mostly just wanted to snuggle down under comfortable quilts, watch movies and eat cranberry walnut bread. Winter is creeping upon us and with Halloween under our belts, the onset of the cold months is inevitable. When my daughter and I got out and about to do the grocery shopping, we indulged in some window shopping and wandering too—we meandered … Continue reading

Weather and Your Family ‘s Vacation

When was the last time it poured during your family’s trip to the beach? Do you remember the ski vacation that didn’t yield any appreciable snow? What about the trip to the kite festival on a day with no wind? No doubt about it; Mother Nature can really put a damper on even the most intrically planned vacations. Which is why it’s best to know before you go. For example, did you know the odds of having to protect yourself from a bolt of lightning at Disney’s Magic Kingdom in Orlando, Florida are greater than anywhere else in the United … Continue reading

How Hot is it where You Live?

During July, we had surprisingly nice weather here. It was warm and sometimes rather hot during the day, but nothing compared to the July heat we are used to. The nights were unusually cool and comfortable, and believe it or not, there were a few evenings that were downright chilly. Well, August seems to be returning things to normal, and it is as hot as… well, a typical August day. Yesterday, temperatures were in the high nineties, and the heat index was around 104. Today, temperatures are expected to hover around 100 degrees, but coupled with the high humidity, the … Continue reading

Royal Marriage Law to be Abolished?

Tony Blair’s successor faces an interesting challenge in his first year as Prime Minister. There is a provision in the 1701 Act of Settlement that ensures the ascendency of protestant royals and forbids British Monarchs or their heirs from marrying Catholics. So why does Mr. Brown have to consult with constitutional advisers and repealing this part of the Act of Settlement? It may have to do with the fact that Peter Phillips, the son of Princess Anne and Mark Phillips, the eldest grandson of Queen Elizabeth II and 10th in line to the throne announced his engagement last week. Mr. … Continue reading

Wednesday Widgets: Radar in Motion

Summer can also mean thunderstorm season, when the heat and humidity come together in just the right way. It seems like we have been having quite our share of severe thunderstorms in the last few weeks, here in Pennsylvania. I have been finding myself watching the weather carefully because of this. We have to plan our summer family activities around the weather, and be prepared at home in case we lose power (and therefore water, too). There have been a number of weather-related widgets coming out, but I like Radar in motion. Rather than just giving me a forecast, as … Continue reading

Garage Sale Day: When the Sale Doesn’t Happen

We are all faced with a conflict once in awhile, or unforeseen event that prevents us from following through with plans. Sometimes it is out of our control, like the weather. And sometimes it is as simple as someone getting sick or an appointment being scheduled that simply cannot be changed. A rainy day will prevent a garage sale from bringing in sales from most people. And a bitter cold day can also prevent someone from coming out into the cold, rather than staying in the warmth of their home. If you advertise your sale in the paper or around … Continue reading

Marriage Laws – Idaho & Utah

Our series on marriage laws continues with stops in Idaho and Utah. I’ve had friends in Idaho for years, but I’ve never been to the state. So let’s take a look at the marriage laws governing these states. Idaho There are two interesting things about Idaho marriage licenses. The first is that they do not expire. The second is that Idaho requires the couple to read and sign a premarital educational pamphlet on AIDS. As for the rest of the laws governing marriage licenses, Idaho has pretty standard fair. You need to provide a birth certificate, a driver’s license and … Continue reading
