McDonald’s vs. “McCurry”

Chock another one up for the big guy. According to news reports, American burger chain (make that powerhouse) McDonald’s has just won a five-year legal battle against a tiny Malaysian restaurant called “McCurry.” A London newspaper reports that attorneys for the fast-food giant persuaded a judge that potential customers might confuse “McCurry” with McDonald’s. “McCurry” is a 24-hour open-air restaurant, which “serves spicy fish-head curries, tandoori chicken and other Indian delicacies on a street corner in Malaysia,” under a large neon “McCurry” sign. According to court documents, McDonald’s claimed: “The defendant’s use of the word “McCurry” and employing signage featuring … Continue reading

McDonald’s Succumbs To The Hedgehog

File this under the “Strange But True” category. Just when you thought you had heard it all comes a gem like this: “After years of campaigning fast food giant McDonald’s is redesigning its McFlurry ice-cream containers because of pressure from hedgehog lovers.” Huh? Yes, that’s what my initial reaction was too. Surely, this must be some sort of joke. Or, perhaps, I am just missing something. But, oh, no, it’s true. Hedgehogs have apparently humbled the popular eatery into reconstructing its “killer” ice-cream treat covers. “Killer?” Apparently so. According to the British Hedgehog Preservation Society up until now the opening … Continue reading

The End of an Era

As a friend recently said to me, we are living in an age where the Big Mac is now going the way of the Marlboro — McDonald’s is transforming its menu to accommodate the rising concerns with healthier lifestyles and obesity in this country. You may believe they did this before when they began offering salads in the first place and when they began offering apple slices in place French fries for happy meals. McDonald’s latest twist to match the more modern way of thinking where food and activity is concerned is their new Go Active™ Happy Meal ® for … Continue reading

Fast Food Facts

When was the last time you went to McDonald’s or any other fast food restaurant? Come on – we’ve all done it. The hotter it gets outside, the more we’re out and about and the less we want to spend an hour cooking on a hot stove. It’s really easy to pull up to the drive through and feed the kids and ourselves on a fairly low budget. Still, when it comes to fast food – there’s a really good way to talk yourself out of that drive-through and back to the stove – hot or not. McDonald’s Double Quarter … Continue reading

Healthy Fast Food part 2: McDonalds

I saw Morgan Spurlock’s documentary Supersize Me and I was as grossed out as anyone at his weight gain and other ill health effects from eating nothing but McDonald’s food for every meal. And who could forget that scene of him trying to eat the supersize quarter pounder meal in his truck, and despite the encouragement of friends, tossed his cookies, so to speak, before he could finish. (His mistake was trying to down a supersize soda without working up to it first, but still.) But by the end of the movie I felt a little defensive of the fast … Continue reading

Precocious Puberty: How it Could Affect Your Child

Precocious Puberty is a condition where a child enters into his or her sexual development too early. What is not commonly known is that children with neurological disorders of every kind are twenty times more likely to experience early-onset puberty than neuro-typical kids. A study found that children with various forms of autistic disorder typically have higher levels of testosterone in their family members than that of non-autistic children. This elevated level of testosterone has been shown to be a risk factor, and it’s prenatal. What is too early? For girls, any signs of sexual development prior to age eight … Continue reading
