How To Improve Your Memory

If you can never remember what to buy at the market without a list; if you have a hard time remembering where you last saw the remote control; or, if you can’t seem to recall the name of that nice woman who lives down the street, perhaps you aren’t eating enough fish. According to a recent survey, we could improve our memories if we watched less television, completed more crossword puzzles and ate more fish. The results come as a result of an on-line survey, taken by more 30,000 people as part of Australia’s science week. It also found people … Continue reading

Do You Keep Losing The Keys To Your Kingdom? (Or At Least To Your House?)

If you are anything like me, your keys must drive you nuts. Every time I enter my house, I vow to put them in the same place all the time. No matter how hard I try, they seem to have a mind of their own, which tells them to play hide and seek with me on most days of the week! Not only that, they seem to reproduce at night, keeping me always on the prowl for their mating grounds the next morning. I have tried hooks, counters, special dishes, duplicate sets of keys and absolutely nothing works. Duplicate sets … Continue reading

Old and Cranky, or Old and Smart?

A new study is making connections between above-average intelligence and disagreeable behavior in the elderly! The study, done by Morgan State University in Baltimore, tested nearly four hundred healthy adults between the ages of nineteen and eighty-nine. The participants had varying degrees of educational achievement, from high school grads to those with graduate degrees. The participants over the age of sixty were divided into two groups: those with average cognitive abilities and those with superior cognitive abilities. All of the people in the study were given the same tests and questionnaires to test both intelligence and personality traits: openness, extraversion, … Continue reading

Archiver’s – The Photo Memory Store

One of my favorite past times as a die hard scrapbooker, is visiting various scrapbook stores. When we finally got an Archiver’s out here in our area, I was excited and couldn’t wait to see what all the buzz was about. I was one of their first customers! If you have never had the opportunity to shop in an Archivers, you sure are missing out. As they like to advertise, you feel “like a kid in a candy store”. There are aisles upon aisles of glorious scrapbook supplies. In fact, often when I go I find things I had never … Continue reading

Happy Father’s Day!

Father…Dad…Daddy—these words evoke strong emotion in children, whether the child is two or 42. A father can make a child smile or cry with a simple look. The power of a father is infinite. When a father lifts you up, you feel like you can conquer the world. When he lets you fall, it feels as though the world falls with you. Today, on Father’s Day, I’d like to pay a special tribute to my own dad. I spoke to him on the phone this morning and had a lovely chat with him for about half an hour. Because we … Continue reading

Journaling: Remembering the Little Things

While we often remember to journal about our experiences, holidays and special events in our lives, sometimes we forget the little things. It’s important to take time out of our busy lives and schedules to smell the flowers, or to take notice in the little things around us. Sometimes it can be as simple as a certain look your child gives you, all the way to what a day to day schedule is like for them. But do you remember the last time your child had a cold? What did they do? What special things do you do when your … Continue reading

Simple Games

Here are some simple game ideas to exercise your children’s minds while entertaining them at the same time. A Twist on Memory Games Draw lines to divide a standard size sheet of paper or poster board cut down to size, into four even sections. Have your children draw pictures, covering the whole sheet of paper. The drawing should attempt to cover each section equally. You might want to select a theme such as animals and have each child draw his or her favorite animal. When children are finished drawing and coloring their pictures, they can cut each one into four … Continue reading
