Primary Time: Missionary Work

Sharing the gospel with others is an important part of the teachings of the church. As we do this we are not force our beliefs on others, but rather open the door for them to ask questions and to learn as much as they feel comfortable learning. Primary children can also participate in inviting friends and loved ones to learn more about the church. You can have your children invite friends to participate in family home evenings and family activity nights. One great way to do this is to invite the entire family to participate not just the friend. This … Continue reading

Senior Missionary Series: What If I Don’t Like My Call?

Once in a while, when a missionary receives their call and they learn where they are to serve, they are disappointed. Perhaps they took two years of high school Spanish and are all set to serve in a Spanish-speaking mission, and they end up in Oklahoma. Maybe their hearts were set on Canada and they are called to Japan. Whatever the case may be, there are times when the calls we are extended aren’t what we’d hoped for. As a senior missionary, you do have more say in your call than a young elder or sister has. Every effort is … Continue reading

Senior Missionary Series: Receiving Your Call

Now that you’ve submitted your papers, it’s time to wait for that all-important moment when you will receive your call. In days past, when all the forms were filled out longhand and send in through regular mail, it would take quite a while for your call to arrive. Now that everything has been made electronic, you will get your call in as little as a week, but generally around three weeks. Your call will arrive in a 10X13 white envelope with the Church’s address in the upper left corner. When you open it up, the first thing you’ll see is … Continue reading

Return with Honor (2007)

This recent addition to the LDS film genre stars Javen Tanner as Rowe McDonald, a young man who has just been released from his mission. He has two goals upon leaving the mission field – the first is to baptize his mother (Tayva Patch) and the second is to marry Ali (Joey Jalalian) the girl of his dreams. She’s been planning the wedding already, so that one’s practically done, but he’s not sure how things are going to go with his mother. On the way home from the airport, the taxi he’s in is hit by a semi-truck. The taxi … Continue reading

5 Practical Tips for Your Short Term Missions Trips

This blog is part of a series. We’ve been comparing two short term missions teams: the team from Anywhere and the team from Somewhere. First, we looked at what they did while they were on their trips. Then we looked at what it was like after they left. Both definitely made a lasting impression. . .but as we saw, that’s not necessarily a great thing. These are the things that teams need to be mindful of as they are preparing to go support a ministry. #1. Cultural Expectations You are not familiar with the culture in which you’re going. Sometimes … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: Bringing Friends to Christ

We have already studied much of the second chapter of Mark reviewed as part of lesson 7. However, as I read, I was touched by the role of the friends of the palsied man. Though they are rarely discussed, they seem like four men worthy of emulation. When Christ returned to Capernum, a multitude of people gathered in his home to hear Him preach and minister. Among those wishing to be included were four men bearing a palsied fifth on a litter. When they could not get through because of the crowd, they climbed on the roof and lowered their … Continue reading

General Conference From the Past: Preparing the Way

As I studied the ministry of John the Baptist, I found a talk in the archives that touched on his life, his teachings, and his ministry. In April 1980, Elder Thomas S. Monson gave a talk entitled “Preparing the Way”. President Monson’s talk centered primarily on the Aaronic priesthood, which John held. This priesthood came to him by virtue of his lineage; like his father, Zacharias, he was able to administer in the ordinances thereof. This priesthood enabled him to baptize, both mortal men and the Savior of the world. Elder Monson discusses the fact that the power of the … Continue reading

Three Ways to Help Your Local Missionaries

When I first joined the church, I loved going on splits with the sister missionaries. Now that I have three small children – and one on the way – getting out is a bit more challenging. At the same time, my circle of contacts at present is mostly limited to other LDS sisters, which gives me few close friends to introduce the missionaries to. I would like to share a few ‘think outside the box’ ways that you can help the missionaries if you find yourself facing similar challenges. Be a people greeter. When you see the missionaries bringing investigators … Continue reading

Top 10 Reasons to Be Glad Your Neighbors Are Mormon

Sure, everyone runs and hides when the missionaries come knocking, but you know there are times when you’re glad your neighbors are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. 1. You mention in the morning that you have the sniffles and a slight cough. Your neighbor shows up the door that night with three course dinner and a smile. 2. You get lots of free movies. Sure, they are religious movies, but who knows when they will come in handy? It seems like every time the church magazine mails out a new one, your neighbor brings it … Continue reading
