Imagine attending the Super Bowl and instead of hearing a celebrity belt out “The Star-Spangled Banner,” he starts singing the Russian national anthem. A similar situation took place yesterday during the inauguration of a China-financed stadium on the Caribbean island of Grenada when a band performed the national anthem of Chinese rival Taiwan. According to news reports, Chinese Ambassador Qian Hongshan and throngs of Chinese laborers who built the $40 million Queen’s Park stadium as a gift were visibly annoyed as their Asian rival’s anthem echoed inside the 20,000-seat venue. At about 8:00:02 p.m. last night the phone rang. I picked up to hear a voice on the other end hiss: “Mario was robbed.” It took me a minute to figure out that the voice belonged to my friend and former colleague and that “Mario” was Mario Lopez from “Dancing with the Stars” (and not my cousin Mario).
