Teaching Our Children Modesty

Think your children are too young to learn modesty and respect? You might think again. Most parents work with their children at a young age teaching them to respect others. Teaching modesty and self-respect should happen at a young age. Let me clarify a bit on the modesty issue with babies and toddlers. I don’t believe modesty is as applicable to younger toddlers. Babies and toddlers are very into their own world anyway so teaching them self respect in the way I’ll be discussing may not be beneficial until closer to age 3. When our older son was about three, … Continue reading

Family Home Evening: Dress and Appearance

The next section in the “For the Strength of the Youth” pamphlet is “Dress and Appearance.” This is a great time of year to review the basic principles of dressing modestly and taking care of our bodies. As you read over the suggestions you can determine which activities will work best for your family. You can open your lesson by reading 1 Corinthians 3:16-17. After you have read the scripture discuss what it means when it says that the body is a temple. Then as a family read the “Dress and Appearance” section from the pamphlet. This can be a … Continue reading

Looking For Modest Clothes?

Well, like it or not summer is really coming. I happen to like it, but I was not expecting the 90-degree weather that hit today. So it is time to pull out all that summer clothing. I am tired of all of my summer outfits, and to be honest, not a lot of them fit. So I decided to go browsing and see if I can find some clothes that are modest and that fit me. I found a lot of sites. If you are looking for a modest swimsuit for you or your daughter you should visit ohanaswimwear.com. This … Continue reading

A Moment on Modesty

This blog might end up sounding a little bit like a rant, so I apologize in advance. I have a four-year-old daughter, and I am appalled at the clothes that are available for her to wear. It is becoming more and more difficult to find clothes that are modest. I was excited that my daughter was going to be able to move out of the baby section, and up into children’s clothing. Well I was, until I walked over there. Everything I saw was either way too tight, or sleeveless or baring a midriff. It honestly makes me ill to … Continue reading

Islamic Dress Code — Why Does She Dress Like That?

So many people see a Muslim woman dressed in head to toe and think, “Oppressed! He’s forcing her to dress like that.” “He” refers, of course, to her dictator of a husband. After all, no woman would shun mini skirts, tank tops, and shorts of her own free will. No thinking woman would wear long sleeves and pants in the heat of summer. If a woman is dressed like that she is obviously either brainwashed or beaten. Right? Wrong. I am an American, born and raised in a free country. Growing up, I was encouraged to wear make-up and dress … Continue reading

Where Can I Buy Modest Clothing?

As pants get lower and shirts get higher I shudder to think what clothes will be like when my own daughters are teenagers. As a mother I want my girls to dress modestly. I like John Bytheway’s analogy. He said a person is their face not their body. So we shouldn’t dress to call attention away from our faces to our bodies. We want people to look at who we are and that is found in our face and reflected in our eyes. Dressing modestly ensures that people keep their focus on your face, on you. As my husband and … Continue reading
