Millionaire Moms on Oprah and The View

I need to start this blog entry with a bit of a disclaimer. Please don’t think that I sit around and watch daytime talk shows all day. I just watch them *most* of the day, and I have never, ever eaten a bon-bon while doing so. (End of disclaimer). I actually have a valid reason for vegging in front of the TV this afternoon…blog research, of course! Both Oprah and The View featured “millionaire moms” and I couldn’t wait to share two inspiring stories with you. The first multi-millionaire that was featured on The View this morning was a single … Continue reading

A Mom And Her Tools—Not So Strange After All

This is a follow up to my previous blog about the perceived stereotype of women and tools. I believe I may have put the cart before the horse in listing my top 5 favorite tools and neglecting to mention the many, many women who consider their power tools their favorite accessories. These are women who not only welcome tools as gifts, but also go out and buy them for themselves. A growing segment of the female population takes their tools very seriously. In fact, a recent report stated that last Mother’s Day Amazon Books’ hardware site sold nearly as many … Continue reading

“Supernanny” May Not Be Super Mom

I saw “Supernanny” Jo Frost doing a television interview on FOX News yesterday and immediately stopped what I was doing. For some reason this no-nonsense British nanny, with her trademark catch-phrase “Go and sit on the naughty step” has intrigued me from the very first time I “accidentally” caught a few minutes of her ABC show more than two years ago. I have been hooked ever since. I often wonder why it is that I am so riveted by her show. I’m not clear if it is because like re-modeling shows on HGTV (Home and Garden Television) I am a … Continue reading

I Don’t Like Babies

Okay, hold on to your hats moms and dads. I read this article this morning entitled “bored mom sparks outrage.” Apparently, an American expatriate in Great Britain wrote an editorial on how boring she found being a mother. Now, before you string me up for saying I understood what she was talking about – most moms do. It just sounds horrible for us to say we find mom hood boring. My husband’s grandmother, a mother of eight children herself, did not like babies. She liked toddlers. She loved children – but she didn’t like babies. A friend of mine loves … Continue reading

Those Wonderful Boys

A few years ago someone made a comment that I thought was odd, but have grown to understand. This person said to me something like-“I really feel for you being a single mother and of two boys nonetheless.” At first I thought it was a little bit of a chauvinistic comment, but I have come to realize that this person really had some keen insight into boyhood. In general, boy’s needs are different from the needs of girls, especially as they get older. As a former girl-I know I need some help to find out what boys need to grow … Continue reading

It’s Tough Being ME

Do you ever have those days where you’d just like to sink into bed, pull the covers over your head and hide? I’m having one now. I just got rejected from a literary agent. This was it, my chance to obtain representation, but with one swift e-mail I was barred from hope. Now I’m pouting. My kids are in the next room and I need to go play with them, and then get dinner started. And I will. But sometimes it’s just plain tough to be a parent. So what do you do when it gets tough? What do you … Continue reading

Moms- The Importance of Sitting Still

I once heard somebody define being a grown up as coming to the place where you not only take care of yourself, but you take care of others as well. If this is the case, then just about all of my growing up has taken place over the past ten years. When I was single, I could barely take care of myself. I was notorious for missing appointments because I forgot about them. I couldn’t keep my room clean, I was overwhelmed by a week’s worth of laundry and a healthy meal was pizza with green peppers or mushrooms on … Continue reading

Are You A Parched Petunia?

Well, I’ve managed to do it again. A couple of months ago I bought two hanging baskets overflowing with pink, white and purple Petunias. They were lush and elegant. They reminded me of a Summer wedding. I proudly hung them by my screened in porch, where I have slowly watched them deteriorate. Their demise began because I was certain that they were getting plenty of rain water. I noticed one day that the leaves were wilted and I checked, only to find that my poor little flowers were totally parched. I did my best to nurse them back to health, … Continue reading

Happy Mothers Day!

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers around the globe. This day was set aside in America in 1915 as an official holiday to honor mothers and all we do for our families. The story of how Mother’s day began starts with a daughter named Anna Jarvis. “Anna’s mother had provided strength and support as the family made their home in West Virginia and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where her father served as a minister. As a girl, Anna helped her mother take care of her garden that was mostly filled with white carnations. When Mrs. Jarvis died on May 5, 1905, … Continue reading

Happy Mother’s Day to All Moms

Good morning! Happy Mother’s Day! I wanted to take a few minutes today and share some personal thoughts about Mother’s Day and what it means to me. Growing up, the two primary influences in my life were my mother and my grandmother. I never knew my father and many of my friends growing up were either in the same boat as I; or they saw their fathers very rarely. While I know today is Mother’s Day and a day that we honor and celebrate our mothers, grandmothers and more – I wanted to take a moment to be grateful that … Continue reading
