Gospel Questions: What is the Woman’s Place in the LDS Church?

In the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the righteous men are given the gift of the Priesthood. This means that they are able to give blessings to heal the sick, to bless the sacrament, and in other ways to use a small portion of God’s power for the benefit of their families and those around them. Because this gift is given to the men and not the women, some have questioned the woman’s place within the LDS church. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints reveres women. Each of the prophets has paid homage to women, to … Continue reading

RS/EQ: The Women of the Church

Our Relief Society and Priesthood lesson for this week came from the Spencer W. Kimball manual and is entitled, “The Women of the Church.” President Kimball expressed his appreciation for the way his mother created a home where service was central to all they did, and explained that his wife created a similar home as well. He then goes on to discuss the role of women in the church. First, men and women have equal roles, even though those roles are different. We are not to compete with each other. The man does not walk in front of the woman, … Continue reading

Relief Society: “What Latter-Day Saint Women Do Best: Stand Strong and Immovable”

In her talk “What Latter Saint Women Do Best: Stand Strong and Immovable” Sister Julie B Beck spoke to the sisters during the Relief Society General Broadcast. She speaks first of the love that she has for all the sisters. She then refers to a quote by President Hinckley, which reads: “I am convinced there is no other organization anywhere to match the Relief Society of this Church. It has a membership of more than five million women across the earth. If they will be united and speak with one voice, their strength will be incalculable. . . . It … Continue reading

Taking Care of Yourself

It is time when the kids are settling into a new routine at school. I’ve blogged in the past on the importance of adjusting your family’s routine to the new school schedule. It is a great time to start holding family home evening and family prayer on a regular basis. You may need to adjust your schedule as well. The beginning of the school year is a great time to make sure that you are taking care of yourself spiritually, physically, and emotionally as well. If you are not taking care of yourself you are not as able to you’re … Continue reading

General Conference From the Past: “Women of Righteousness”

In a devotional address given at BYU on March 13, 2001, Elder M. Russell Ballard of the Quorum of the Twelve addressed the role of women, and how God views them. This was a wonderful talk that I, as a stay-at-home mom, particularly took to heart. It is very uplifting and, as Elder Ballard stated, good for both women and men to read and ponder. He begins by quoting a letter sent to church headquarters from an LDS woman who felt as though she were living a lie. Despite a strong testimony of the gospel, she doubted her value beyond … Continue reading

Mothers and Daughters – Shelley Klein

So, what did you get for Mother’s Day? I got three paper crowns, a picture of my son playing in nursery (from his nursery teachers) a back rub (it doesn’t get any better than that) and a really nice nap (okay, that was pretty good too.) And my mom gave me a gift book called “Mothers and Daughters: More Than 150 Heartwarming Quotes, Poems, and Anecdotes” compiled by Shelley Klein. The author has gone through volumes of journals, novels, letters, and interviews to pull out quotes from women (and a few men) throughout the last two centuries who have had … Continue reading

“Will you call me mommy?”

I had assumed that, since my older daughter was using a few words (among them the Korean word for “mommy”) at the time of her adoption, I would tell her that I was her new mommy. Many mothers who adopt from Korea have a necklace made with the Korean characters for mother. These, along with T shirts, are also available with the characters for “grandmother” and other family members. I sent a photo album for the foster mother to show the child, in which I had painfully transcribed family members’ roles in English and Korean. I saw her point to … Continue reading

Dear Heather …I’m Exhausted

Dear Heather, I’m exhausted. I confess, I don’t like exercising. I do it because I need to do it and because I read blogs like yours that promote all the wonderful things that exercise can do for you. I want exercise to do all those wonderful things for me. But I have four children, the youngest is turning a year old next month and the oldest is finishing up the fifth grade at the same time. My husband works and is often gone for 12 to 14 hours a day. I never stop moving, from the moment I get up … Continue reading

A Mother’s Ministry

As a stay-at-home-mom I have questioned the significance of my role as well as the position God would have me in regard to the body of Christ. I know I am doing a valuable service to my young children getting to devote a good amount of time to them during these early years especially. Recently I’ve really begun to discover the role God has given me as a mother in ministry. There is no other person who currently spends more time with my children than I do. I may have the most influence in their little lives. As they grow … Continue reading

The Proverbs 31 Woman: The Virtuous Wife

A friend of mine did a Bible study on the Proverbs 31 woman where she was asked to apply the scripture to her own life. As per her suggestion, I too would like to do this. I would also like to encourage other woman to look at the example set forth in the Bible of The Virtuous Wife and apply it to your lives as well: The Virtuous Wife 10 Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth is far above rubies. 11 The heart of her husband safely trusts her; So he will have no lack of gain. … Continue reading
