Slow Down, Are you Moving too Fast?

Racing from thing to thing? Juggling and multi-tasking like nobody’s business? This might be the typical state of being for many single parents but it might not be the best tempo for health, sanity and family life. Yes, we single parents have a tendency to move at the speed of light (alright, I am being a bit hyperbolic but still—we get a lot done in the course of a day) and we might have to move speedily from one thing to the next. But if you find you are doing everything quickly—a 3-minute shower, rushing through breakfast or eating in … Continue reading

Work and Bake

This is a bit of a kooky time of year for me–in addition to work and wrapping up the calendar year, I am like many others who run a business, work, and take care of a family–I also have plenty of holiday and seasonal obligations as well. As someone who loves to cook and bake, I often give homemade treats and goodies and gifts. That means I also often find myself trying to work and attend to my baking at the same time. This is another reason I am thrilled to work from home–I can do the seasonal multi-tasking! To … Continue reading

Making the Most of Down Time

Just about every type of business and every industry has some built in “down time”–a period when work obligations let up and there is a little breathing room. Some people choose this as the perfect time to take a break or a nice vacation. In your home business, you may be able to make productive use of the periods of down time in order to grow and strengthen your business operations. Are there slow times in your home business in every day or one day a week? Is there a typical lull during a few days each month? Or do … Continue reading

Haste Makes Waste

This has always been one of my favorite old sayings—mostly because it speaks to me and my temperament: I am one of those people who SO has a tendency to get going too fast and make mistakes; the type of person who might start a project or test without reading all the instructions—so I need to be reminded to slow down and take my time so that I don’t make a mess of things… When it comes to a small home business, we often think that the more we do in terms of quantity, the more balls we juggle in … Continue reading

Look for Tasks That Go Together

Multi-tasking may be a constant way of doing things for the average single parent, but it does not have to be stressful. I’ve learned over the years that by pairing tasks in a practical and creative way, I can multi-task without getting overwhelmed. It all comes down to finding tasks that fit well together. I have a few friends who have no children at all and I notice that they way they do chores is completely different from how I have evolved my chores and errand-running—they tend to do one thing at a time: they will save up all their … Continue reading

Subcontracting Out Work: The Basics

I know that I am supposed to be doing legal transcription blogs right now, and I promise they are coming, but I’ve still got more research that needs to be done on the topic. I am interviewing a gal who works in the industry so we can get an inside scoop on the legal field like we did the medical field, so it is in the making, but the series isn’t quite ready to hit the spotlight yet. “Coming Soon To A Blog Near You!” (actually, very near to you – the very blog you’re on right now. Amazing how … Continue reading

Multi-tasking and Clutter: A Team?

Multi-tasking is one of those things that sounds great, but when it comes down to performing, it is not so easy. (Think of that juggler with the plates and the balls that used to appear on the Ed Sullivan show in between the dog act and the ventriloquist). It’s a great theory, the idea of doing several things at once, but does it really work? In doing several things simultaneously, it may appear that efficiency is greatly increased. This could be so, but rarely is, as in effect what happens is that more than one thing becomes half-done instead of … Continue reading
